Central apnea and young age

Post by CatherineF » Wed Mar 21, 2012 4:14 am

What is the possibility of having central sleep apnea, that will not resolve over time (CPAP therapy emergent CA) in a young (23 years old) woman?

I doubt if there are actual statistics to fit the criteria, and the percentage is probably fairly low, but I'd be more interested in knowing whether the diagnosis was made by highly qualified people after thorough testing with very good equipment, and then be sure I was prescribed the appropriate machine, mask, etc. to get the best therapy possible.

More information would also be helpful... whatever you can tell us about yourself and what kind of experience you've had that prompted your question... There are people of all ages who've been diagnosed with every type of sleep disorder at every age, and through trial and error, the majority have found help, if not perfect immediate answers, at least a better quality of life.

It's hard to hear a diagnosis of anything at 23 of course, but even if it's a less common one, you wouldn't be alone and technology is changing so quickly these days that what someone may be told today could have 'easier' answers tomorrow...

If you are using a machine and mask already, could you go to User Control Panel at the top left (small blue writing under logo) and fill out the complete make and model information (text, not icons please) in your Profile so we'll all know that much each time you post.

Thank you for answer Julie. I was not diagnosed with CA, I had few of them during titration study (8/h), but my doc said it will resolve over time. I have to choose a BiPaP machine and I wanted to know what can be the risk that those CA will persist...

I would go with what the doc says.
Take care of yourself now and don't worry about whenever, whatever, or 'if'.

Practically everyone has a few centrals during testing, and maybe a handful or so afterward, but unless you have a lot every night, I wouldn't worry about them at all.

another young gal with apnea...I'm 25 and was diagnosed a year ago and I'm healthy weight. I have Obstructive sleep apnea and some Centrals. With my machine (s9), I only have a few centrals per night. AHI less than 1.0.
