S9 Autostart feature -- Pros and Cons ?

Post by Papit » Sat Mar 17, 2012 10:36 pm

What are the Pros and Cons of using the Autostart feature on the ResMed S9 Autoset and other S9 machines?

I like it because I would sometimes forget to turn my old machine on and would get all settled (many pillows and facing away from the machine) and then have to turn over to turn the thing on. It took a couple of days to get used to the auto on and I wasn't sure I would like it but now I prefer it.

It's a safety feature, in case of power failure it will restart the machine (maybe) ff masks don't always allow it to work. It's the auto off that should be turned off. Jim

Is this a setting where the S9 turns itself on if the hose and mask are connected?

I guess I've never used it.

I start by pressing the Info button once then holding down the right knob for about 3 seconds which gives me a big smiley or frown at full pressure to read integrity of the seal (<>leaks).

I have always used the auto on and auto off, I just mask up take one breath and whalla,,,, air at my pressure. If I need to adjust my mask before I hose up (if I choose to switch masks for the night) I mask up, get in the bed attach the hose and good to go. If I didn't have the auto on auto off, I may lay down get comfy and not want to roll over to turn it on, especially with my back issues. Once I'm comfy that's it, good thing I don't need to use the necessary room during the night, but if I did, I'd undo the hose and mask it to the bathroom, the S9 auto will shut off while I'm in there and keeps the bright light on to light the way! You'll love it NateS give it a try and get back to us!!

Okay. while we are on the subject of constructive fiddling, maybe someone can help me reduce or turn off the ramp. After 3 months, I am pretty sure I don't need it, but I can't seem to find the control even though I have the clinician menu turned on and have been able to adjust my pressure with Epap.

Where is the ramp feature hiding from me? I thought it was even supposed to be available in the User menu with or without the clinician menu on.

TIA, Nate

I don't use the auto on off feature. When I get in bed I am ready for sleep. So I hit the button and roll over and I am OUT! lol

As far as the ramp on the main screen you will see the ramp turn the button to highlight the ramp then push the button down. That will turn the screen orange. you can then turn the button left or right to increase or decrease the ramp to until you get to off.

Re. the autostart (Smartstart)/autoOff function, I seem to have returned from a bathroom break a few days ago, put my mask back on and actually forgot to press the S9 Autoset start button. I slept, mask on and CPAP off, for a few hours and didn't realize it until I looked at the data in the morning and saw that the machine was OFF for all those hours. I thought that was a good reason to begin using Smartstart. You don't have to mess with the ON-OFF button any more. One breath and the machine turns itself on. Until seeing a post below, I didn't realize it also turns itself off if you remove the mask or disconnect the mask hose from the CPAP tube.

That is no longer a problem in more current S9s (Software Version 0903, 0904, & 0905).

You can have it both ways. Set it for auto-start/stop, but if you hate to wait, push the button of instant on/off.

The downside I found was that if I took my mask off in the middle of the night, I might hear it blowing and put it back on.
I wish start and stop were seperate settings like the PR machines.
