Is there an alarm only for "humidifier empty"?

Post by dormirjespere » Fri Mar 16, 2012 6:28 pm

I know there are tons of alarms for the machine I have, unfortunately all of them were going off in a recent hospital visit. I guess what I should do is contact my supply company to see if they can set only 1 alarm, for humidifier empty. Seems logical to me that could be set and nothing else go off... I have PR Bipap ST if that helps...

Should be no need for alarm for humidifier if you are using it correctly. It is large enough to hold enough water for a good 8-10 hours sleep. You are supposed to empty it every morning and wash it. Then put new water in it before you go to bed. So obviously, if somebody is running out of water, they are either using it more than 8-10 hours a day OR they aren't emptying it and refilling every day as the manual instructs you to do.

My S9 has an alarm for empty humidifier... It smells like feet!

Yes, I am aware that the humidifier should last 8-10 hrs. I've been on bipap for about 2 yrs. The problem is that I sleep poorly, and go hours w/o sleeping while on the bipap. I then get up for an hr or 2 or 3, then go back to bed. If I actually am able to fall asleep then, I may sleep for 8 hrs or longer. Hence, no water in the humidifer. It wasn't meant for those kinds of situations. Also, when I finally fell asleep 2 days ago after not sleeping at all for one night, and only a few hrs the next, I slept for 12 hrs. Not conducive to keep your humidifier from frying.

Last nite the bipap was on for somewhere around 9 or so hrs. It had a smidgeon of water left in it. I do wish they'd make the reservoirs bigger for those of us who unfortunately don't sleep in one stretch. I've asked, the supply house tells me no mfgr makes a bigger reservoir. Too bad, I think it'd be a good idea for those of us who have trouble falling asleep, and then wake up one or more times a night for lengthy periods of time.

The only thing that will happen to you with an empty humidifier is that your nose and throat will be dry. I forgot to add water to mine one night and thats all that happened..............it was probably empty for at least 6 hours . There was no burning smell or anything, just a dry throat.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

That depends on the patient. I can't let my humidifier go dry or I suffer severe sneezing and runny nose for a day or two afterwards. That's just the way it is for me. It sometimes happens if I just have it set too low. Your comment shouldn't be a generalization; there are numerous posts on this form from folks like me that must have humidification all the time or suffer.

I know from experience that there are some of us in dry climates that disagree. When I had an FP humidifer, I had to set it at its warmest setting in the dryest weather. It used a pint of water in 7.5 hours at that setting. At times I'd have to put two humidifiers in series to make sure it would last the entire night if I was sleeping in. The alternative was to suffer the next day or longer.

I am staying with my dad who is new to the cpap world. He takes his off at night during sleep. Is there an alarm , maybe for the mask, to wake me in the next room so I can place his cpap back on. His oxygen gets dangerously low without it.

There might be a machine with a "large leak alarm", but I am unaware of what it would be.
If you start a new thread, others will be aware of your question, which is unrelated to the topic of this thread.

What's your humidifier setting. With my S9 set on 2, the water lasts 3 nights. Much depends on the humidity of the room also.
PS....I rarely empty and clean my humidifier. I just top off every 3 days.
