Water Distillers?? It's time! Your recomendations please

Post by Lizistired » Mon Mar 12, 2012 12:34 pm

I know several members have them. Please save me some shopping frustration.
Experience? Models? Pro's? Con's? Price range?

I had a fluoride treatment at the dentist on thursday and since have had severe aerophagia, stomach cramps, and some of those other GI issues that we probably don't want to discuss!
I had wondered why I always seemed to be in the doc's office at the same time of the year... Well DUH, I have my dental appt and get sucked into the fluoride treatment at the same time of the year.
So what is the best distiller, price considered??

I always skip the fluoride treatment (they always look at me weird) because it upsets my stomach too much and makes me gag. I figure I get plenty in drinking water, toothpaste, etc. You don't have to have it if you don't want it.

No idea about water distillers though. I just buy the bottled stuff.

I have been using the Love Model 4 for a while and it works very well.

I Got this one from Amazon. It's about $150.
http://www.amazon.com/Water-Distiller-C ... 625&sr=8-5

I absolutely love mine. It's been very dependable, and I use it every day.
It takes about 3 hours to make a gallon of water, but at least you know it's absolutely pure.

Kenmore, from Sears.
Slow as the seven year itch, noisy, countertop space hog.
Unless you can get it on clearance, you might never break even--
----unless you live a long, long way from the store.

Wondering what the connection between flouride treatment and distilled water is? I am probably missing something really obvious (as I usually do) but am curious.

(Tangent, courtesy of OP)
I just answer the question.
Personally, I get the fluoride, even though my insurance won't pay for it.
It really does work; and I hate drilling!

If the OP is trying to avoid flouride, switching to distilled could be helpful. Normally, Flouride should only be found in tap water.
I add minerals to my distilled water to make the taste more palatable.

Because of that. I never made the connection before. If I'm that sensitive to a fluoride treatment, I have to wonder what the daily dose from tap water, sodas, coffee, canned goods, and toothpaste might be. My doc's solutions were Nexium, Nasonex, ENT, Upper GI, Lower GI, and suggested anti-depressants.
I went through 2 gallons of distilled water yesterday, so I figure it's time to shop.
Last summer I switched to distilled water for about 2 months because the municipal water comes out of the Ohio river and smells nasty even with their "added chemicals".

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't realize they were so noisy. It might live downstairs.

I am on my 4th distiller. First 2 were Kenmore - last I checked Sears didn't sell any any more. The first was a model like this:

Image

4th is that model except the glass bottle broke first use and I took the charcoal out of the final filter. The first one's switch broke.

The second was this and I liked it but then the fan got too noisy and repair was more than a new distiller.

The 3rd was this one - Image

I kept going through power cords for it - they were standard computer cords but still and it got noisy too.

So now I am back to waterwise (which was what the Kenmore ones were) and will see how long this one lasts.

Our water when we moved here wasn't fit to drink. Our water in IL definitely wasn't fit to drink and switching to bottled WI water and distilled saved my stomach. Now our water is better but I still drink distilled and do get my minerals from other sources.

Thanks Jules, Bottled water is still a grey area. I don't want to have to do the research on where it comes from.
I might just takes some distilled water bottles to my brother's(well water), or my mom's(cistern) and fill them up. I have a cistern that has been disconnected for several years, but I think it is going back into service.

I did the math and convenience analysis. Much cheaper and easier to buy an occasional gallon of distilled water from the drug store for $1.25/gallon than to have yet another appliance parked on the kitchen counter consuming power and my attention.

Fluoride, however, is another discussion.

My distiller is relatively quiet, at least to my ears. I used to have a Sears Kenmore that I did think was noisy.
As far as the "economics" of it all, I never took cost into consideration. For me, I couldn't care less about the cost analysis. What concerns me is knowing my water is pure for drinking . I really can't be sure of the purity of store bought distilled water, or for that matter ANY type of store bought water.

If the the distilled water was JUST for your cpap machine, I suppose it wouldn't matter a lot which distilled water you use.

I react to many bottled waters. The tap here wasn't fit to drink (as it wasn't in IL). For me a distiller was the only way to go. I bought my first one in 1989 long before CPAP. If it was just for CPAP then buying the gallon at the store would be reasonable.

I found a brand of bottled water in IL I could drink - not sure the brand is still available - Buffalo Don's and Osco (I know Osco has been bought out by someone else but....) water appeared to be bottled by Buffalo Don's and I could drink it. I drank that in the summer and distilled in the winter. The distiller uses about 3.5 KWH to distill a gallon and that is all HEAT which enters the house. No point in heating the kitchen up to then AC the heat away. Here on the WA coast we don't have that issue - no furnace - no AC - we heat house these days with a heat pump and don't use that in the summer to cool. Our electric rate doesn't go up in the summer either.

I tend to distill about 5 or 6 gallons a week. For cooking I use it for rice. I use it for all my drinking that I would have used tap water for and I use it for carbonated water using a Soda Stream device. I am not accumulating plastic bottles and our grocery load is lighter.

Each person has their own priorities. Clean drinking water is one of mine.
