Does this graph look good to you guys?

Post by Ants » Wed Mar 07, 2012 10:04 pm

So I've been consistent on my CPAP therapy for about 2 yrs now. When I look at my graph it doesn't show anything - to me - that is cause for alarm. Honestly though... if I dont use my CPAP for a night... its definitely not a night or day difference. I will say I feel unusual without the mask on... and I'm sure I snore without the CPAP... but otherwise tired sensations are about the same.

If theres nothing wrong with my graph... does that mean maybe I no longer need CPAP?

Thanks guys!

All this graph means is that at these pressures your apnea events average out to around 3 an hour. It means the treatment is doing its job.
These are the events that occurred despite the best efforts of the machine.
It doesn't show you all the events it prevented. Just the ones that got away and scored.

So the report is a good report in that it is showing very effective therapy. It is likely preventing a truckload of events that you don't see here.

Only way to know if you don't need the cpap machine is to have a sleep study.
If you reduced your pressure to straight 4 cm...and still had this low AHI...you might or might not be able to do away with the machine but even 4 cm pressure has some therapy value and the only way to know for sure is a sleep study.

Of course if you used 4 cm straight cpap and you have a truck load of events show up...that will show you what the higher pressures are preventing.

Interesting idea pugsy! When I did my sleep study in 2008 I think my AHI was 16.

Speaking about these units. Just how accurate can they be at detecting events anyways?

It has been 4 yrs since I had my last study. I wonder if I should/qualify to retest under my insurance.

These machines do a pretty good job detecting events and sensing the event precursors and taking steps to prevent them.

Unless something very drastic has changed it is unlikely that your 16 AHI pre cpap will have gone away. Now some people who were clearly obese have been able to sometimes reduce the pressure needed or in rare cases improved to a point the cpap machine is not needed. Losing weight isn't a guaranteed "no more cpap thing" but it does happen sometimes.

Of course it needs to be evaluated by a real sleep study. If you are thinking of having another sleep study I would make sure that insurance will pay and what your portion of it will be.
Check with your doctor and see if he feels like a follow up sleep study is needed.
