dr. called moving to ASV..very sad
well, doc called today. he just got my 30 day report and wants me to move up to asv. I've got to go to sleep study tonight to get set up for it. I am so sad and upset. I've heard such bad things about this machine, and how you can't breath right and how difficult it is. I'm so tired of all this. I just want it to stop

Re: dr. called moving to ASV..very sad
The bad things are about the NEED for the machine. For all the bad things you hear you are not hearing the good things. There are many people doing much better on an ASV. Be happy that your doctor is trying to find a solution for you. Try to look at the positives.lostmary wrote:well, doc called today. he just got my 30 day report and wants me to move up to asv. They can be tough to get used to, but it's not bad at all after that. Couple of months at most and you'll be fine, and hopefully a lot sooner than that. Keep it in perspective, that this machine should take care of the problems you are having now - better health trumps annoyances
Re: dr. called moving to ASV..very sad
Mary,
You need to relax! You may well have developed a very inaccurate impression of the ASV machine.
There are many here who have had a greater experiece that can share with you. In the next couple of weeks, I am going to post my road to getting an ASV machine. But, for you, the Reader's Digest version is:
In November I had my first sleep study.
In December I had a second sleep study. The first half was straight CPAP and the second half was ASV. I had a TERRIBLE experience on ASV. I felt I had to breathe all the way to my toes to keep up with the Respironics BiPAP autoSV Clinical Unit. The doc's comment on the sleep study was, "couldn't tolerate ASV."
His Rx was for a S9 Elite straight CPAP at 10 cm. I used it for about 60 days and had average AHI over 10 and CAs in the 6 - 8 range. I went back to the doc and he still left me on CPAP. So . . .
I bought my own ResMed VPAP Adapt SV, LITERALLY guessed at pressures and the first night I had ZERO events. I have used it for about a month now, with a cumulative AHI under 2 and Apneas of about .6.
I went back to the sleep doc again, armed with all my graphs. On 2-29-12 I had a third ASV sleep study. It went better, but I still had problems with HIS machine.
So, with that background, here's my message to you . . .
My month of use of the VPAP has been TOTALLY uneventful. From day one, I had NO TROUBLE adjusting to the machine. My experience has been that it is NO MORE DIFFICULT than straight CPAP.
Now, as an aside -- I also bought a Respironics BiPAP autoSV. I used it for about a week. It was a little harder to sync my breathing, but by no means DIFFICULT.
You may well be letting this get out of proportion. You will probably find that it is NOT as difficult as you expect. PLUS keep in mind, he wouldn't be moving you to the ASV unless your therapy required it.
Good luck in your therapy!

I started with ASV because when I went for my titration, I could NOT breathe out at the pressures needed for my hyponeas and apneas... struggling to do so created MORE.
I absolutely LOVE my ASV.
They set me at EPAP = 10, MinIPAP = 10 and MaxIPAP = 14. Because I got the software and a card reader, within ten days, we'd changed that to EPAP = 6, MinIPAP = 10 and MaxIPAP = 14.
That's where I am today, with an AHI of 1 or less.
I can't imagine NOT having an ASV.
I sleep well... well, except when my dachshund tries to sleep on the hose!

Re: dr. called moving to ASV..very sad
Well, Here it is, the morning after, and I'm in love. Who would have thunk it? lol. I slept so well last nite. It was so much easier then the bipap was to use. This morning the tech took me around to some of the bosses and all that had just come into work to have me tell them how great the asv was for me. I was almost giddy, that's how great it was. Maybe because I expected the worse the best happened, but for whatever the reason it worked......so well. they used the respon. machine. the one that is also a bipap. I remember inhaling really strong a couple of times, (maybe more) but not enough to wake me up or worry me. I can[t wait to get my own machine now. hope it will be within the next couple of days.
thank you all for your great words of support. they really helped me .

Oh, I am so glad that the titration went so well! This is really good news and so encouraging.lostmary wrote:Well, Here it is, the morning after, and I'm in love. Who would have thunk it? lol. I slept so well last nite. It was so much easier then the bipap was to use.
You're going to be fine. And as others have said, try to see the positives in all of this. Be grateful there is such a thing as an ASV machine to treat you!
Let us know when you get your machine!

I know what you mean. I have 3 doxies that sleep cuddled around me, (you know what that is like lol) I thought at first that they would be frightened of the mask and all, but they don't care as long as they can press against me. I was afraid I would have to move them out of the room because of the machine, but they are fine. When I stress out at nite with the mask, I just pet them and they let me know everything is ok.

lostmary,
thank you for the posts. I am going for my ASV titration this Friday and am hoping this will reduce my Centrals. I will post the results next week. Your success has given me a more posative attitude and hope for success.

They started me on a regular cpap machine at first. Besides not working for me, found it much harder to breath and very uncomfortable. The first night on the ASV felt MUCH better and is actually taking care of my needs.lostmary wrote:Well, Here it is, the morning after, and I'm in love. Who would have thunk it? lol. Good luck lostmary and wildman, hope it works well for you guys too.

Re: dr. called moving to ASV..very sad
Greetings Mary! We're sorry you need to use an ASV unit. But the GREAT news is that the units out there make a huge difference (as you have seen). And the better news (as you will learn) is that folks here, who use ASV units, tend to try very hard to help one another overcome the challenges they can pose. But the difference in sleep makes the frustrations all worthwhile.lostmary wrote:... Here it is, the morning after, and I'm in love. Who would have thunk it? ...
So, welcome to the ASV club. You are *NOT* alone. And you will have LOTS of experience to help you on your new leg of your journey.
Best wishes and may you have many more nights of good sleep.

Glad it went well for you. I am very surprised about the negative information you were given and wonder who could have said such bad things. I could not tolerate continuous pressure and was prescribed an ASV as my first machine in December and found it easy to adjust to, having never been on any machine before except the CPAP at the lab that I hated.lostmary wrote:well, doc called today. he just got my 30 day report and wants me to move up to asv. Mary,
I have a Pair O'Dachs, two standard, long-haired dachshunds, who will, next Tuesday, be fourteen.
Shadow and Sunny are fine with my equipment. Well, except for the time I woke up and the air coming out of my mask was hot, hot, hot! Instant paranoia -- is the machine on fire? No... Mr. Shadow had pulled my hose between both sets of legs, down along his chest and abdomen, and was using it as an under-fur air-conditioner!
I'm so glad your ASV titration went really well! And yes, stroking a dachshund is VERY relaxing! (Can't you just picture a sleep center if I showed up, dachshund in tow, for relaxation therapy?)

Re: dr. called moving to ASV..very sad
I have had my ASV for about 3 weeks now. Does take a bit to get used to and as said before, relaxing is important. I did not see if you got your own machine yet, but I was titrated with Respironics, but have a Res Med Adapt. I found the Res Med much easier for me "blend" with. It even gets easier every night! Only really bad part so far about ASV was paying for the machine even with the insurance company paying 80%. Have to admit now, I don't want to get up in the morning, because I "enjoy" sleeping on the machine.
Re: dr. called moving to ASV..very sad
that is great to hear. I only had the overnite trial, but I spent the whole day running around and feeling great. I have to wait for the doc to get the info from the study, but I did call him today and left a message on how great I felt. Thought that might move things a little faster. I can't wait to get mine. If every nite is the way it was for the study, I may stay in bed sleeping for a long time. lol. It did seem weird to have the feeling of the machine forcing the air in. it didn't really wake me up, but boy did it get my attention. I don't mind at all. I love it and now I hate my bipap. no where as good.
