Machine and mask noise--which are quiet?

Post by newguy » Tue Mar 21, 2006 2:40 pm

Just trying to get some idea which CPAP/APAP machines and masks are most quiet, as spouse is a light sleeper. Anyone know?

I have a Respironics APAP with C-Flex and HH. IF you put it on a carpet you won't hear anything. (I recently travelled with mine)

I keep mine just off a hardwood floor and I can hear it slightly.

I think the mask is where you will get the most noise.

I have a ULtra Mirage Nasal - which is very quiet.

I have heard others say the Activa Nasal is also very quiet.

I have a Swift Nasal Pillows and that IS very noisy in comparison.

Best of luck,

Tom

I also have a Respironics Bipap Flex Auto with HH. Mine sits on a night stand next to the bed it is very quite, I was suprised. I have only been a hose head for 6 weeks. The Masks makes much more noise than the machine. I have the Mirage FF Mask and the Swift. I have the new ComfortLite 2 Nasal Mask on order. The Mirage is much quieter than the Swift. However, the Swift is not as confining and you can wear glasses with this interface. I use both just trade off every 3 to 4 nights. I hope the Comfortlite is quieter. It looks like it should be, it has 3 times as many air exit ports than the Swift. At higher pressures the noise seems to increase on any mask that I use, which makes sense. My auto setting is 90% below 13cm ipap and 90% below 11cm epap. If you pressures are higher, exit air flow will be higher, therefore, noise will probably be louder.

I'll second Tom's endorsement of the Ultra Mirage (actually, mine is the Ultra Mirage II). At pressures from 7-11cm it is completely quiet unless something like a pillow or bedspread gets right up against an exhaust port. My Resmed S8 Autoset Vantage has a barely discernable low-pitched hum. It's sitting on a towel atop a rather insubstantial nightstand right next to my bed.

I'm looking forward to hearing more feedback on the ComfortLite2.

Since I'm just making peace with my SWift I'm not quite ready to take on another mask but maybe down the road - why not especially if we get some more comparitive reviews between CC2 and other pillow masks.

I'm still considering having a FF Mask for the inevitable head cold/allergy thing.

Is there a consensus on the most popular FF Mask?

Regards,

Tom

The Aclaim is the quietest mask of the 15+ I own. Actually it is totally silent. Respironics' masks with the diffuser elbow are almost silent. The Activa is the loudest mask. My AutoSet T APAP is extremely quiet but I think it has been replaced with newer models. My PB 420E APAP is quiet but not silent.
