Just finished Sleep Study...

Post by nlifesimage » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:10 am

Just finished my sleep study this morning and FAILED! I shouldnt be excited about that fact, but I'm finally getting answers to the problems Ive had with my health. After 3 hours the tech came in and placed me on cpap. Said my index was over 30 and that I was hypopneic. Now the waiting game for the Dr to read the study and my insurance to approve the cpap. I'm very glad I came across cpaptalk! Great topics and will be referencing posts soon. What is the biggest tip anyone can give a newbie??

My advice to the newly diagnosed is on my blog.

It's critical to understand how your insurance pays for the machine and supplies. Call your insurance company yourself rather than relying on the doctor or DME to tell you about your insurance coverage.

It's critical to get a full data machine. Read and re-read JanKnitz's What you need to know before you meet your DME BEFORE you get a call from a DME that you've never heard of and that wants to set you up with a Resmed S9 Escape or a PR System One Plus while at the same time telling you "This is the best machine there is."

One more tip - don't accept an offer from the DME to bring the machine out to your house! Many DMEs will offer to do that - "For your convenience."

If it turns out not to be what you have specified when you actually see what they have ready for you, and you are getting a lot of pressure and double-talk to try to persuade you to accept it, it is a whole lot easier, and less awkward, to get up and walk out of their store than it is to get them and their machine out of your living room!

Don't set yourself up for disappointment by expecting miracles. Most likely you are in for a long haul of trial and error before you obtain gratifying results.
