2nd night, is this this normal?

Post by reffus1881 » Sat Feb 04, 2012 7:53 am

This a lot harder than i expected. very hard actually. I don't usually wake up during the night.First night about 4 hours sleep/machine time. Second night 3 and 1/2 hours and i took the mask off at 11PM and dozed on and off till 3AM. I made the mistake of going to bed at 8 PM i was so sleepy and tired. I had fallen off to sleep in the chair and was afraid if i didn't go bed i might fall asleep in the chair and miss cpap time. Both nights awake at 3AM. Now is this a matter of somehow staying awake as long as i can or am i missing something. or maybe missing a lot. I put together a treatment team this mourning that is comforting. Do we ever contact each other out side of these posts?

You can PM (private message) anyone you want to talk to privately. (See PM on left)

Welcome to the forum. There is great help here if you need it. Read the light bulb at the top as it's got lots of good information.

If I were you I would take a short nap today if you can. Maybe that will get you through to a normal bed time tonight.
Put your mask on at bedtime and try not to take it off.
I can see why your tired and drowsey..you've been awake since 3AM.

Be patient with yourself and try to relax about it all. Believe it or not this will all become second nature.

What is the treatment team you put together?

I had the same problem when I first started. after a month or so, I talked to my Dad and brother (Who both have CPAPs) and my dad gave me a sifferent mask, my brother gave me a set of nasal pillows. Hated the nasal pillows. the different mask was better, but still not right due to it being too big, but I knew I was onto something. I went to my DME and based on everything I have tried they suggested a third mask, and that's the one I have been using for about 5 months now. it is awesome! My body is now used to the therapy and I sleep soundly for as long as my time allows (which is a seperate issue- I need to get more of this better sleep, but I digress)

Having my normal sleep messed up was the norm for me. My mask kept waking me up all the time; mostly due to leaking in my eyes. I was dead tired the first week or so. It does get easier but you have to leave the mask on. I am on my 3rd mask now. This one seems like a winner for me. The DME gives me 30 days to try out a mask. If yours does the same and something about your mask is bothering your sleep, I would talk them them about what it is exactly and see if there is a different alternative. Btu you have to make yourself leave it on. No sleeping without it.
