SystemOne Help... I think it's possessed...

Post by OnceSolemn » Wed Jan 25, 2012 2:05 am

Hi everyone. New CPAP user here, so bear with me.

About a month ago I was issued a Philips-Respironics SystemOne REMstar Auto A-Flex unit with the humidifier. It was set to my prescription, a range of 7 - 9 cmH20. When I'd start the machine, it would start at 7. SleepyHead reports confirm that throughout the night it varied between 7 and 9, as advertised.

Two days ago, all of a sudden, the machine starts at 9 cmH20 when I start it... and now SleepyHead shows that it's in CPAP mode and the prescription is 9 cmH20.

I'm not sure what changed or why, but I can't seem to get anything back to the way it's supposed to be. Even going into the Clinician menu doesn't help, since all of the settings there appear correct! (Auto, 7 min, 9 max, etc).

Any thoughts? Is something broken? Am I missing something?

Tomorrow I guess I'll call the DME, but until then...

Probably changed by your doctor via the modem.

Is your machine actually an AutoIQ? Those ones only do auto for thirty days, at which point they change to CPAP.

I don't think that the Auto IQ has AFlex...I believe the Auto IQ is model DS450 and has CFlex like the Pro does. Fulltime Auto CPAP with AFlex has model number DS550.
There are stickers on the bottom of the blower and one will show model number.

If you do indeed have Model DS550 and cannot get it out of cpap mode then you are probably correct, it is possessed. It sounds like it is doing what we would expect the Auto IQ to do. Certainly not what we would expect the fulltime Auto to do.

The Auto IQ works for 30 days in auto mode and then switches over to what it thinks is the best pressure and delivers that pressure as a straight cpap pressure and locks you out of auto mode. No more auto function. That sucks and for that reason I wouldn't want the AUTO IQ.

Re-read the nameplate.
Check carefully for signs of tampering.
I'm not paranoid--just observant.

It does have A-Flex, at least according to the PDF I found: http://www.healthcare.philips.com/pwc_h ... cSheet.pdf

Yep sure does. Thank you I had not seen that page.
It also shows that the model number for the Auto IQ is indeed DS450 so if OP has a DS550...something is amiss.

Years ago, my hubby had found a 1943 copper penny--worth a lot of money if genuine.
After highly magnified inspection, he found it to be a fake--a very good fake.
Just saying.

Is the OP looking at the machine for a model number or a manual?

I thought there was a way to enter the clinicians menu and put the IQ back to Auto?

Altho, I would bet some of the companies are going to start building these things so we can not get into them, maybe put an expensive key on the outside, like GM building cars that require special tools to do things.

My understanding is that once the Auto IQ has used up 30 days of APAP use (can be continual or sporadic use totaling 30 days) that it reverts to being a plain straight cpap (PR S1 Pro CPAP) and no longer has any auto adjusting capability choices in the clinical menu. APAP mode is no longer available option.

That would be just like them--still not smart.
Even the new Coke machines (the Freestyle) have a combination latch.
My guess: keys can be stolen; but combinations can be reset.

If its the auto versus the autoset, it only does the variable pressure for a month. It's supposed to be a diagnostic mode and then goes to the most frequently used pressure in straight cpap mode. Don't even understand why they make them. You should have ramp on your cpap so that you can start at a lower pressure and then build up to 9.

I think the guts of these machines are all the same. It is the firmware that is different. If we had access to firmware we could make a PR S1 Plus into a PR S1 APAP. Couldn't we have fun doing that?
Perhaps a good software hacker could unlock the firmware on the brick machines...it is beyond my skill level though.

There is a firmware flashing utility out there. I made a thread about it previously. They recently updated it too...
