Vitamins for brain to reduce Apnea damage

Post by noSLEEPforYOU » Mon Jan 23, 2012 7:05 pm

How many have tried or continue to use supplements for the brain. I read a few articles about vitamin B1 helping reduce the damage of apnea. There are endless potions and snake oils that will make you smarter than Einstein and faster than Mike Phelps. The industry is full of promises and opinions that contradict each other. My doctor says to just take a multi vitamin, but he missed apnea for ten years. I heard another study stating that all vitamins are a waste of money. The truth is out there and as elusive as an honest politician.
Here is a list of some of the vitamins that are supposed to help your brain. Vinpocetine, St Johns wart, Phosphatidylserine, Oatstraw, Ginseng, Tumeric and sleep helps too.

You answered your own question.

Eat well and get plenty of exercise - doesn't need to be anything more than brisk walking although weightlifting and flexibility exercises are valuable for many reasons.

I do take fish oil tablets but do believe they are much overhyped.

A good rule of thumb: If you ever see it in a pop-up; you don't need it.

That vitamin has eluded me for years. I had one night of sleep in the last month. Last night was horrible I woke up hundreds of times with that air dryer. The humidifier is inadequate for mouth breathing at 17 cm . I had to close my mouth to wet it and then the mask would start leaking. The humidifier was set at 5 I think it only goes to 6.
I am going to try saline up my nose tonight. I have always struggled to breath in the winter and now that I know I have sleep apnea it's even better.

The humidifiers are designed for nasal passages and will not be able to moisten a mouth that is mouthbreathing through much of the night.

Have you had an ENT examination to see why you breathe through your mouth so much?

If you set the unit to climate control. This allows you to set the temperature only. It can be set from 60F to 86F. It doesn't eliminate dry mouth for me but it reduces it.

I have chased a few of these down in my days and concluded my efforts are better spent in the following manner:
AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES:
...
1. AVOID CUTTING YOURSELF WHEN SLICING VEGETABLES BY GETTING SOMEONE ELSE TO HOLD THE VEGETABLES WHILE YOU CHOP.

2. AVOID ARGUMENTS WITH THE FEMALES ABOUT LIFTING THE TOILET SEAT BY USING THE SINK.

3. FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE SUFFERERS ~ SIMPLY CUT YOURSELF AND BLEED FOR A FEW MINUTES, THUS REDUCING THE PRESSURE ON YOUR VEINS. REMEMBER TO USE A TIMER.

4. A MOUSE TRAP PLACED ON TOP OF YOUR ALARM CLOCK WILL PREVENT YOU FROM ROLLING OVER AND GOING BACK TO SLEEP AFTER YOU HIT THE SNOOZE BUTTON.

5. IF YOU HAVE A BAD COUGH, TAKE A LARGE DOSE OF LAXATIVES. THEN YOU'LL BE AFRAID TO COUGH.

6. YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

7. IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU'VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

Perhaps adding a room humidifier would help?

The problem with a lot of these kinds of claims is that even if they're legitimate, they don't tell you that:

Substance X only reduced the risk of condition Y by 5% in the study.
There isn't really good statistical data, just one small study.
It took a heavy dose of substance X to get the 5% reduction.
Substance X has some known side effects.
No one has studied the long term detrimental effects of large doses of substance X.
The study was done on rats who were being fed a specialized, unhealthy diet that increases the incidence of condition Y.

Suddenly, substance X is promoted by all the health food nuts as if it's the cure.

They claim substance X is all natural because it occurs in lima beans. They don't tell you that it takes 10 lbs of beans to get a day's dose of substance X. Or that substance X is destroyed when you cook lima beans.

Or that there are more natural substances that will kill you quicker (yuk) and deader (yuk) than synthetic ones.

archangle, you old cynic, I am starting to agree with you too much.

Yes, don't forget nicotine, caffeine, sugar, ricin, lactose, gluten, salt, cholesterol, saturated fat, starch, crude oil, botulism toxin, lead, mercury, and asbestos are all natural substances.

However, there ARE lots of natural substances that are good for you. It's just that they only provide increasing benefits until you get as much as your body can use. If your diet had no salt in it, salt would be one of the most beneficial things you could add to your diet. Once you get all you need, more doesn't help, and it becomes harmful at a higher level.

On a slightly different note. Since last spring, it has been recommended that Diabetics take large amounts of D3, which is new to MD's, however the health food industry has been saying take more D3, amongst other things, since at least the nineties.

It's entirely possible that Vitamin X or snozzberry extract is a great treatment for what ails you, and the medical community doesn't realize it yet. That's where a lot of new drugs come from.

However, your statement points out the problems with vitamin claims. The research seems to indicate that vitamin D3 deficiency may make diabetes worse. There's not good evidence that many people have enough D3 deficiency to make a difference in diabetes, or that D3 supplements will help anyone who doesn't have a deficiency.
