1. Start your largest computer monitor. If you can see your TV on HDTV, fantastic.

2. Put FlightTracker on satellite, fill the screen with the picture. Zoom in on a busy section of some foreign country.

3. Turn on liveatc, along with your computer speakers.

The signal is indeed multi-channel.

If you have surround speakers, so much the better. Headphones are intense.

Visit a busy airport tower, one speaking in a foreign language.

Your room will fill with dozens of voices. Controllers, pilots of all nationalities.

On your monitor, hundreds of radar targets, all updating in near real time.

Click on a target, get anything you might need to know on the left side of the screen.

4. If you've got some, and it helps you sleep, then by all means, light up.

5. Now, turn out all the lights . . . sit in the dark . . . and enjoy.

(I went with Moscow airport at 3 am EST, and it put the full zap on my head.)

Hi Paul.

Yes, flight tracker can be quite a useful tool for travelers, or someone needing to keep tabs on a friend or family member in flight.

He was looking out the window with his binocs, writing down tail numbers on his clipboard, making anotations, and watching as planes took off and landed. After watching this for a few minutes, I started to wonder what was going on in light of recent events. I couldn't imagine terrorists would be operating like this in plain sight, but still.... The last straw was when he pulled out a cell phone and called someone and started reading off strings of numbers in what sounded like a foreign language.

I raced to the nearest security agent and reported what I had witnessed. She looked over at the man and coolly informed me that he was a 'plane spotter'. Evidently it is a hobby of some people to sit in airports 'spotting' planes and relaying sightings and statistics to other participants.

I was dumbfounded to find that these non-passengers were allowed to 'loiter' in the departure areas in this security-conscious climate, while at the same time we were listening to recorded announcements advising us to notify gate agents of 'suspicious activity'. Just seemed weird to me.
Yes, that is part of the cognitive discordance that is airport security.

The two sites I've listed, along with the third site I list below, supply a would-be terrorist network with so much detailed, real-time information, it's a wonder that they all don't faint from the dizzying wonder of it all.

Yet we've all either heard, read about, or experienced first hand the seemingly absurd and draconian rules and searches that are now part of any visit to an airport.

Well, I guess this third site pretty much takes the cake.

Listen in on NASA shuttles, Military Comms, War frequencies, and last but not least, Presidential frequencies, including Secret Service frequencies, which are typically scrambled, but not always.

If you want to say something to the Prez himself ("Here are the coordinates of my DME, please dispatch a spare cruise missile . . . "), or just track his every move, knock yourself out.

The Internet is indeed, a Brave New World.
