Dry Mouth with Full Face Mask

Post by Kanes28 » Sun Jan 08, 2012 6:45 pm

Hello everyone,

I use a ResMed S9 with a Mirage Quattro and slim line hose. My pressure is at 15 and I run my humidity at 5. I hardly ever have leaks. Problem is Im a mouth breather and my tongue and mouth are completely dry in the morning. Ive tried nasal pillows and taping my mouth shut which wasnt very comfy for me. My sleep center has been very helpful but as pointed out Its hard to mess with success and whats working. The Quattro is working and Im very comfy with it

My 6 month average with the Quattro -AHI is 0.4
Total AI is 0.1
Central AL is 0

My sleep guy at the center gave me a heated hose and suggested I raise humidity up. I tried it a couple nights and my AHI shot up and I had some bad nights. could never get it dialed in so I went back to the slim line hose. Any thoughts on what I should set this at? I was suggested to set it up manual and run temp to max 86 and try humid at 6.

Hi I've used Quattro for approx 2 yrs. I have the same exact problem. Dry mouth doesn't affect my sleep, only have it when I wake up, I drink water to relieve the dry mouth. Sorry, couldn't be more helpful.

I am a little surprised that you "tinkered" with the humidity-level and your AHI went up. Unless I'm missing something, it shouldn't have happened. Same with the hose, unless the hose leaked. The heated hose aids in rain-out and resmed claims the air is heated thru the heated hose. I am a severe mouth-breather and though it is uncomfortable, I bear with it.

I do not have the S9, but on my PRS1 I run the humidity at 4, one notch below the highest level and I do not have the automatic humidity control tuned on. I also use a hose cover to help prevent rain out. When I went from a nasal mask to a full face I found I needed more humidity to prevent dry mouth as I am a "mouth breather"

I'm not an expert but if I had to make an intelligent guess, you are still a mouth breather even when wearing ffm and so air is still going to dry out your mouth. The ffm just keeps a better seal and it is obviously coping very well with your apnea. Keeping water or drink by bedside might be helpful. Depends on how inconvenient lifting mask is. I use swift fx and I've had dry mouth for other reasons then mouth breathing (medication). I just pull that up, take a drink and pull the mask down. What you can try to help is there are mouthwashes out there specifically for dry mouth and mouth sprays also. You can find them at walmart, target, any pharmacy, etc. (in the pharmacy section of any of the above mentioned stores in teeth care section)

Thanks to all the replied,

most likely something Im just gonna have to deal with I figured but no harm in asking in case others have tips.

Sheriff, my hoses are damage free. no issues Im aware of. My DME was also surprised when I told him my AHI jumped using the heated hose. I tried it last night and my AHI was 2.2 . was a bad night for me considering I always run 0 to 0.5. dont know why. I just must be sensitive to any slight change from my sweet spot

I also use a Mirage Quattro FFM. I use a spray for dry mouth before I mask up.

I am using Biotene Moisturizing Mouth Spray. I got it at my corner drug store.
