weight loss

Since weight gain is a symptom of Apnea I'm interested to hear if people have lost weight just by virtue of having their apnea under control?

Thanks

hecate,
Well, I used to work out regulary and wouldn't lose a pound or an inch, so frustating!!!! After being on CPAP (took me a few months to get used to) I started losing inches/fat. I haven't lost a lot of weight, but I am building muscle (lift weights, bike, use eliptical machine, ect) and make sure I get lots of protein, fiber, fruits & veggies, water, ect in diet (BUT I DO NOT DIET). Feeling better all the time and I guess I'm looking better too. How about you???

Before CPAP I would diet and not lose weight. It has been a while since I had the energy to exercise though. I have only been on CPAP for a couple of weeks so no real energy gain yet, but I'm hoping that starting a diet again will be more successful this time.

weight loss

Post by cijit » Fri Mar 10, 2006 6:32 pm

Hi Liz , I lost 6 kg (13 lbs ) in the first 3 months with no significant change in routine other than i no longer felt the need to snack particularly in the evening . The theory is that when you sleep well the body produces a hormone that tells it that you are no longer hungry . But different people report different results . Some see a fluid loss in the first month .As hormones balance .
I have seen comments on mask seal problems as people loss weight and face changes .
Hope that helps .Do not worry too much . Get yourself settled and sleeping well for the first three months before you try to make any changes .
We are in summer in New Zealand ( south pacific ), how is your winter ?

I live in Idaho so it's snowing one day and warm and sunny five minutes later.

I lived in Australia for 10 years and loved having summer in winter.

I gained an additional 10lbs in the first year of using the mask. Mostly to blame was my eating habits. Between working late and not being home for dinner, eating late and unhealthy take out didn't help. Also, being so stressed at work and hyper when I got home, snacking late at night became an issue.

I have since changed jobs, went a mild diet- watching calories, drinking a lot more water and basically controlling portion sizes and avoiding more starches, I have since lost 18 lbs since december. I also walk about 2 miles a day now with a new dog we got. Gotten me up of my patukas during the winter to walk. I also don't wake as much during the night and don't get up to snack. The one thing I do have is the energy to do some excercise.

It takes a little bit of everthing and changing some simple habits to help.

Jim

Having the machine working for you should give you more energy. See its introduction as a catalyst to make a few life style changes. I went on APAP in November, and starting January 1, began to exercise daily (45 min av) and watch my calorie intake, also stopped alcohol. Did all this a part of a family "biggest loser" competion. I've now dropped 13Kg and feel pretty good. Three weeks to go for the 12 week competition period to finish. I would not have had the energy to do it all without cpap. Now wake up early and never get tired at work in the afternoon.
