Inhaling fumes via CPAP

Post by liliaqha » Wed Dec 28, 2011 8:45 am

My DH made me a night stand for christmas, and finished it on the 24th. I put my machine and used it the 27th. I could not figure out why I kept smelling fumes through my mask. Woke up with a huge headache and felt weird all day yesterday. Finally last night I figured it out, and moved the machine off the nightstand. Has anyone else had this happen?

Can you put the night stand in the garage or shed for a week or so to let the glue and stain fumes dissipate? That would be the cause, the glue, etc is still fresh and hanging around in the wood and drawers.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

It may take weeks to get the smell from stain and varnish out.

Try putting it in a large plastic bag with some activated carbon, sometimes found in construction respirators, or a refrigerator box of baking soda. Keep it in a warm room so the solvents in the finish and wood will be released more easily.

I am lucky, the scent from the summer skunks and gassy pets passes quickly

My father made a loft bed for my daughter when she was nine and we had to keep it in the garage for month before she could spend more then an hour near it without getting a migraine. Luckily we were waiting for her room to be finished in the basement so she was happy to wait. It was the varathane she reacted to.

My ex ended up in ER with arrhythmia due to the non toxic safe stripper I used on the fire place (get your mind out of the gutter, I was removing 50 years of paint of a lovely oak mantle)

Yea we put it in the office. On it's own it doesn't smell too bad, but I think it just pulled it through the cpap vent and up me nose it went. Ew. I think he used Danish oil and wax to finish it. I feel fine today, it's just freaky. You have to be careful where you put the darn thing!

I would remove it right away, to let it air out. You really don't want to breath that stuff in. Paint and Paint thinner and glue are all the rage with the kids today getting high and brain dead.
Are you sure your DH wasn't trying to knock you off!
Would love to see a picture of it, I think it is a great idea.
Oh and I find that smells are multiplied when I wear my mask. My mother burned some toast all the way in the other side of the house, and it was so strong in my mask, but when I took the mask off the scent wasn't nearly as strong, could barely detect it.
You should always do what I hear the Kings used to do. They used to have someone else take a little drink or part of whatever they were eating to make sure it was safe, and no one was trying to poison him.
So my thought, you have your DH wear the Cpap for the night in the little stand for a night, and if he wakes up, you know it is safe! Better to be Safe than Sorry.
