Continuing Saga of Honking S9 Autoset
Re: Continuing Saga of Honking S9 Autoset
Hmmm, we have one plus and one minus. Thank you for responding.
Re: Continuing Saga of Honking S9 Autoset
sgifford, if you do purchase one and it makes a noise, don't ask any questions about it on this site. You'll get mauled by a few accusing, bad-tempered women and a couple of lecturing men.

I've never had a ResMed machine, but I've probably heard more noise complaints about PRS1 than S9. In either case, it seems every so often someone gets am extra noisy one.

sgifford, If that is a picture of you then I am surprised that you have obstructive sleep apnea. You jaw looks wide and maybe deep (Can you post a photo from the side so I can see better?). You have no fat under the chin. Is your tongue scalloped?sgifford wrote:
Have you had an examination by an ENT with plenty of experience with sleep apnea patients? There is a chance that your sleep apnea is caused by enlarged tonsils or adenoids. If that is the case then surgery would cure you.
Nice symmetrical face. Nose a bit narrow near bridge. Nice haircut. Smile.

Re: Continuing Saga of Honking S9 Autoset
Didn't know I would get a assessment of my features when I put my picture on, but, oh well. Doesn't bother me. I don't like my smile is reason I don't smile in pictures.
Sleep doctor said similar things, but I had a terrible sleep study, and knew my throat collapsed everytime I dozed off, I would dream I was struggling to breath (and my husband gave me a report on the noises I was making trying to breath), woke up 3 AM with headaches, several times I startled awake with something going on like irregular heart beat and jumped to my feet and grabbed phone in case I needed to dial 911, felt dizzy too. I would take slow deep breaths and it would pass. When this started happening, I went to the doctor, and on to sleep doctor and study. Sleep study was in 2005, don't remember details, just that it showed pretty bad obstructive sleep apnea. And since I started on CPAP, I've had none of those things happen. Dr said I was not the typical patient with OSA, but it goes to show you it can really be anyone, not just those with certain physical features. I have had rather severe GERD my whole life. I read somewhere that there can be a connection between the two. Sometimes the CPAP forces air into my stomach (very uncomfortable, believe me) and I have to take off the cpap mask and sleep rest of night without it. My setting is supposed to be 12, but my stomach can't take it, I have it on 8.5.

NachtWurger, thank you so much for your advice. I was wondering how in the world I was ever going to get over it until I read your most profound post and learned it comes with the territory. I particurly enjoyed your evaluation of sgifford's photo. Such insight! I need to write down your technique. It's so very subtle and informative.

So do you have data from your machine to show the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of your therapy?sgifford wrote: I have had rather severe GERD my whole life. If you really need 12 cm pressure and your machine is set at 8.5 cm then you may still be having many apneas which could cause aerophagia (CPAP pressurized air in stomach) and GERD. Data from the machine will give a reasonably accurate picture of the number of apneas that you are still having.
If you have medical insurance you can probably get a full examination by an ENT for $50 copay. Go to one who has much experience with sleep apnea. You might get a big surprise about the cause of your sleep apnea and what (besides CPAP) can be done about it. At the very least curiosity would be satisfied. $50 is not bad for that.

Good luck with the honking.
Bye.
Re: Continuing Saga of Honking S9 Autoset
update as I'm "playing" with the S9;
Since I'm travelling I have many opportunities to try;
- ON the nightstand at or above your head when lying down; bad noise, sound like vacuum cleaner & whistling noise @ exhale
- in a nightstand which has an open cupboard; much less noise I could hear a a bit of the air intake but it was not disturbing
- on the ground straight on the carpet; virtually silent
When I'm home I'll try to put it on a piece of neoprene and see if that takes away the noise, it might be that it resonates white the surface it's standing on.
Cheers,
Michael

NactW, don't have software. My sleep doc is a pulmonologist, I see him once a year.
Will give thought to ENT sleep doctor.

Re: Continuing Saga of Honking S9 Autoset
If currently lacking software I would not hesitate to purchase an S9 Autoset and download the free software. This I would make priority over seeing an ENT.sgifford wrote:NactW, don't have software. My sleep doc is a pulmonologist, I see him once a year.

The software might reveal some problems that could be easily corrected thereby providing a much better therapy.
No software = flying in the fog without instruments.
All the best for 2012.

Check your private message box. I have had a chance to use both machines to compare noise.sgifford wrote: don't have software. My sleep doc is a pulmonologist, I see him once a year.
There is software easily available for use with the SD cards with either brand of machine..The ResMed S9 and the PR System One Respironics machines. No expensive card readers needed. If your computer has a SD slot nothing is needed. If your computer does not have a SD slot then all you need is a cheap generic SD card reader/adapter to plug into a USB port. Cost maybe $10 at Walmart.
