Humidifier "cap" (PR System One)

Post by evbirch » Sat Dec 24, 2011 9:05 am

I just recently got my new machine (FINALLY!) and have the PR REMStar Pro C-Flex + with the System One Heated Humidifier. I love everything about it, but I noticed in the cpap.com picture (pic 3 of 7) there is a red "cap" that fits on to the Air Outlet Port. My humidifier didn't come with this, and I've been trying to rig something together to cover this port. My cat is in love with my CPAP and it is hard to keep his hair out of there.

If anyone knows where/how to get/purchase this "cap," please let me know. Alternatively, if you have found some other product that would work to protect this port, please let me know about that too.

Thanks,
Em

evbirch,

My PR System One Humidifier did not come with a cap on the air outlet port. I never thought about it being an issue until you posted your problem. I have a dog and she hasn't given my CPAP stuff any attention, other than when I first put it out. Now a cat with their ability to climb where ever they desire, makes it interesting.

I first though about putting a small plastic cup over the air outlet port, but if the cat is really interested in the humidifier that could be knocked off easily. A cap from a small bottle or container might sit over the end, but it could also be removed and cause even more interest from your cat.

If it were me I would get this small humidifier hose (cpap.com has free ground shipping until the end of the year) and attach it to the air outlet port when not in use:

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/18-inc ... -ends.html

The cat could still mess with the other end of the hose, but hair or saliva (if it is licking the air outlet port) would not be able to get into the humidifer. You could probably even block the open end of this hose by puttting a large marble or something like that in the open end and it would be completely sealed off.

Hope this helps,

John

I leave my hose attached all the time. I haven't seen one of those red caps anywhere but then my machines were used when I got them. You could just throw a small hand towel over the opening to block it.

I am starting to feel really lucky that my two cats have shown zero interest in my machine Still, dander, cat hair and regular old dust could get in when I take the hose off to wash and dry it, and I hadn't thought of that, so thank you!

I have a similar humidifier model as you do and I didn't receive a cap either. Just for kicks I just now tried a few things around the house - a plastic champagne cork fits really tightly but might put too much stress on the fitting because it is so tight. A little prescription medicine bottle worked, but could get knocked off as easily as a plastic cup would. Maybe a small, heavy glass jar would work?

The best I found so far was just to crimp a piece of heavy duty aluminum foil over the port. It's not elegant, but it seems to do the job. Maybe give that a try?

Thanks for the ideas. I'm currently using a little piece of cling wrap that I wrap around the port. It works pretty well, I replace it every week or so, but it isn't ideal.

I tried using a small prescription bottle and the cap from a plastic soda bottle. The thing is my cat is really in love with the CPAP. He loved my old one too. No idea why, but he lays next to it, with his head on it. I used to leave the tubing attached, but would end up with cat hair inside the tube.

@RocketGirl - I was thinking about one of those plastic corks. Maybe I'll try to carve one a little so it fits better.

@2 B Sleeping Soundly - I like the idea of the short humidifier hose with a marble in it. This will be my fall back if I can't get a cork to work. Very creative! Are you an engineer by any chance?

Thanks again!

I'll let you know if I find something that works!

No, I'm not an engineer. I did grow up with a mechanic/engineer Dad though.

After reading back through this thread I was struck by the no cost, simplistic nature of all of the other suggestions. It made me laugh at myself! I must be (as I suspected) pre-disposed to more unnecessarily complicated solutions from my upbringing and testosterone driven mechanical mind

It reminds me of times while I was growing up. My Dad, able to create/design/fix almost anything, would observe, analyze the situation, create a plan of attack, and successfully address any problem or needed repair. My Mom on the other hand would quickly use whatever was available - duct tape, WD-40 (a lubricant) on mechanical things, and the ever popular 'time-out'; turning off and resting the improperly functioning item (mostly with electronics), then after a waiting period, turning it back on (after it has had time to think about what it was or wasn't doing properly)

Truthfully, both my Dad and Mom were about dead even over the years regarding their given success rates

John
