Rain out....now what?
Rain out....now what?
Got my humidity set at 3.5, but tonite have had lots of issues with water on my face....sooooo irritating. So, thinking it was almost 6AM, I took mask off, but then realized it was only 4AM. Ah well....anyway, wondering what I can do about the water works? I tried searching here, but wasn't patient enough to wade thru all the responses...guessing that the heated hose is not an option for me for awhile, anyway, headed into the Christmas weekend and I'm pretty sure my doc's office will be closed until after the first of the year (and I have no written prescription, so no other options yet).....
Thanks in advance for any tips...guess I'll go back to bed for a couple hours.

Is your humidifier sitting at a higher level than you are? If you put it lower down, you're less likely to have the problem.
Re: Rain out....now what?
You may want to order a "Snugglehose" from cpap.com. I use one especially during the winter time when the temperature in our bedroom gets cooler.

Re: Rain out....now what?
You shouldn't need a prescription for a hose or supplies......only CPAP and mask.

LSAT is correct... no RX needed for the ClimateLine hose. I ordered mine from CPAP.com and had it within a day or two. Works great and have not had any rainout since.

Re: Rain out....now what?
Thank you! My humidifier is about level with me....I will also try turning it down just a bit. Didn't know I didn't need my script for hose, etc. so will definitely look into those options...
Thanks again!

There are a couple of ways to outfox rainout.
As someone has already stated, keep you machine lower than your head.
Use a hose cover...can make one with a towel wrapped around the house and secured with elastics or cut the toe out of tube socks and string them on the hose. Or.. like me, buy some fleece fabric and sew up a hose cover or if your are a knitter or crocheter, do it yourself.
Last one... route your hose UP from your machine using your headboard. My machine is level with my head too, I have a hose cover and I route my hose up over my headboard and then down to my mask. There are other ways to route your hosee in an up manner too, just do a search and you will see many ideas.
Good luck and MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Re: Rain out....now what?
Try to get the humidifier lower than your bed ,
A couple of other things you can try while waiting for a hose cozy or a heated hose.
1) Hanging the hose might help: If the problem is condensation in the hose, hanging the hose will force the condensation on the machine side of the peak to run back down into the machine. Of course, if the condensation happens on your side of the hump, it will run done towards your nose.
2) Run the hose under the covers along side your body. This will keep the air in the hose warmer, and hence, the water vapor will be less likely to condense in the first place. This is what I chose to do, and I've had very little trouble with rainout in the 15 months I've been using a PAP machine. In addition to keeping the hose nice and warm, running the hose under the covers along my body also means that the last little bit of the hose is running UPHILL to my nose. And as we all know, water has a difficult time flowing up hill.
Also be aware of this: Sometimes the condensation is caused by water vapor condensing out of the air we exhale into the mask. We exhale body temperature air that is pretty humid. If you sleep in a cold bedroom and the mask itself is out in the open (i.e. you don't sleep with covers over your head), then when that warm, moist exhaled air hits the cold room temperature mask, the water vapor condenses. Sometimes adding a mask liner will help with the comfort issues here: The liner can help absorb some of that excess moisture.

In a nutshell: Heat, hang, or cover the hose;
Raise the temperature in the room, or physically lower the machine.

erwink, which hose do you have? Did you not get the Climateline with your S9. If not, call the DME, or your doc, and tell them you need the Climateline. No need for you to pay anything more than the copay. The Climateline hose has a connector you have to turn to connect it into the humidifier.

Re: Rain out....now what?
Yep, put your CPAP/humidifier on the floor, or at least a foot below you pillow/head level. The cozy hose warmer is also recommended. Make it yourself (I used $.50 worth of flannel from cloth shop. ez make. works great. No rainout.
Re: Rain out....now what?
Once it wakes you up, you can lift up the mask end of the hose and work the "hill" back toward the humidifier and work it toward the humidifier end and herd the water out of the hose.
Of course, you'd rather not have rainout, but figuring out the easiest way to get rid of the water when it happens is good.
If you can arrange the hose such that it slopes down all the way back to the humidifier, the water won't bother you as much. Some people use a hose hanger so that the hose runs uphill to your headboard, and then runs downhill to your mask. Some water may condense and run down to the mask, but much of it will run back downhill into the machine. If there are no "valleys" in the hose, you won't get the annoying bubbling and cracking noises rainout can cause.
