Mask Prescriptions

Post by Go3Team » Wed Dec 21, 2011 10:46 pm

I've been a CPAP user for almost 16 years now. My current mask is on its way out, and I need a new one. Just about everywhere I've looked I now need a prescription to buy one. Is this a new law, or is it up to the location that you get it from? I've never needed a prescription before just to get a mask. I've already checked to see if my original prescription was still valid, and it's not.

Thanks for any help.

Where are you located? Seems like it was about 2 years ago that they started strictly enforcing the mask RX requirement.

Have you checked EBay? Sellers who used to sell full mask setups, before the RX was enforced, now will sell their masks broken down to replacement parts since replacement mask part don't require a RX. Depending on the mask you can pick up all the parts and build your own.

I'm in Virginia. I had been buying my masks online through whichever store offered the best price on the Comfort Gel mask. The last few masks I got were from my mother-in-law, who worked at a durable medical supply store. She no longer works there, so I guess that's why it was a shock to learn I now needed a prescription for one. Makes things a little inconvenient for me.

Any physician can write the RX for the mask. Your family doctor can. Doesn't have to be the sleep doctor.

I see some sellers on Amazon.com offering masks.. Unsure how they get by the RX requirement since I have never bought from them. I did do a fake order up to final checkout and it was never mentioned.

There are several online sellers who will sell masks without prescriptions, as long as it's not a ResMed mask. Unfortunately, our much loved host and favorite supplier, cpap.com isn't one of them.

Since everyone seems to require a prescription for ResMed masks, I presume ResMed leans on their dealers to require a prescription.

I've ordered a few "trial" masks from Amazon.com and I have wondered why no one asked for my prescription.
