New to cpap...will throat irritation go away

Post by llkoeh » Mon Dec 19, 2011 2:33 pm

I've been on therapy 5 nights now. My throat feels somewhat irritated or just full. Will it go away, is it just part of getting used to the therapy, should I just I take a break for a night or two? I have my humidifier setting on 2.

Welcome to cpaptalk.
You are probably mouth-leaking. Check your data for leaks. You may want to consider any number of options, including a chin strap, a papcap, mouth taping or a full face mask. The option that always works is the full face mask with a papcap. By reducing mask torque as you turn in your sleep, you and up with much less leakage and better therapy.

Mouth taping and a chin strap could be a more immediate solution until you get a full-face mask, if you want to try that first. Others will likely chime in with advice too.

You may also want to consider dialing up the humidity just a touch. That can help too.

I am not sure what you mean about your throat feeling full, maybe you are experiencing GERD. It is alright to experience with your humidifier but I would not stop using your machine. any therapy is better than none.

you could have sinus drainage from humidity not set for your comfort.

When I used my F&P 407 & mouth tape, my throat was always sore. Since I switched to the 432 FFM it's much better. Definitely try a FFM if you can.

What Pickup Truck and Samba said. I experienced exactly what you are experiencing. I was using a nasal mask, and for me, a mouthbreather, it was the wrong mask. I have messed up sinuses.

I went with a full face mask and took to it like a duck to water, though it took me a week to figure out how tight and not tight to have the mask. Then I upped my humidity to 3 and right now that seems to work pretty well.

Once you acclimate to the machine, the sore throat will go away. But find the best mask for you. If a FFM doesn't work, try another one. And then another one if you need to try a third one or fourth one. It really is the most important part of the set up. One could have a top of the line machine but if the mask doesn't work for you, the machine is not worth very much.
