Gonna have Deviated Septum surgery

Post by scottjf8 » Wed Nov 23, 2011 6:33 pm

After seeing a few ENT's, I've decided to get the surgery... My main ENT (who has done tubes/adenoids for both my kids) said I'm about 95% blocked in one nose... No wonder nasal masks don't work!!

Hopefully I won't need CPAP (since my "regular" AHI is 10, and most of those were hypopnea). But if I do, I'll hopefully be able to use a nasal instead of a FFM.

Best wishes for a successful surgery. I hope your recovery goes well, and you are able to either reduce pressure, use a different mask, or best--stop cpap. Don't be too surprised if you must continue using it, though.... surgery only works for a small % of folks.
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

Yea I'm definitely not going in assuming I won't need CPAP, but if I don't need it, all the better. I must want to breathe better.

I had the surgery 9 years ago and after 6 years the deviated septum came back. Of course the ENT doctor never told me that this is common. I hope that does not happen to you. Good luck.

I had the surgery 18 months ago...It made no difference in my CPAP usage. You definitely will not be able to use CPAP for 7-10 days after the surgery. During that period I slept on a recliner.

I had it in 1994 and it went well and I'm still breathing OK though both nostrils and it didn't come back so Good Luck with yours and hope it comes out as well as mine did.

How many noses, do you have? You could breath through your other knose and that would be 5% more than I have at best. In the choice between surgery, or air from XPAP, I'll choose air any time, less pain and trouble. Jim

Having this too - they termed it "FESS".

Mostly I just want to breathe thru my nose so that I can use the nasal masks for CPAP. I've tried about half a dozen full-face and hybrid masks, and nothing's really terrific.

I have that surgery a year and a half ago and I'm very happy with it. I did have trouble with nasal masks prior, and now I can use them (I did also have turbinate reduction). There have been some other benefits as well that I'm afraid to say out loud lest I jinx myself... No sinus infections since...

I had that surgery done over a year ago and fouund it helped my therapy a great deal.

My pressure dropped 2cm, i confirmed this using APAP and even a titration. Also i found that i hardly get congested anymore.

There will be several weeks of swelling to get through once those splints get removed. I had the newer hollow splint that you can breath through, not the old solid plug type.

good luck.

Thanks for reminding me, Uncle Bob... Talk to your doctor about whether it's possible to avoid splints and packing the nose. Rumor has it that is what makes it uncomfortable. I didn't have splints or packing and it was not bad at all. Course I also had a tonsillectomy at the same time, so maybe my attention was drawn elsewhere!

Had it this morning... It's pretty uncomfy, but not too much pain per se. Lots of gooing out of it

I can already tell I can breathe better in the one side.... Grt my stints out Monday, and no cpap until then.
