Air blown through Tearduct..

Post by Fossy » Sun Dec 11, 2011 7:37 am

When i wake up most mornings and i've managed to sleep with the mask on throughout i often find my right tearduct/eye annoyed and when inhaling with the mask on awake on full pressure i can feel some of the air making its way through the tearduct..

Anyone ever tried this? Any advice on what you can do to make it stop?

I had that problem and what fixed it was a mask liner and a leak strap. But I see you have a nasal mask, so don't know if that would be right for you.. Maybe someone else can come along who has experience with nasal masks....

The duct that's blowing air is what's called the "Punctum". Following is a link to a video that'll help explain how it works (and what its purpose is).

Because the pressure inside your breathing system is greater than atmospheric pressure surrounding your body, an air leak through the punctum is possible.

If the punctum air leakage is severe, I think they can make a plug for it--but it's expensive.
You might want to try a total face mask. Respironics makes one that looks like a fireman's mask.
The pressure would be equal on both sides of the duct--preventing most air leakage.
Not everyone fits this mask.
