My first forgetful night.... oh, boy.

Post by Emilia » Sat Dec 03, 2011 1:38 pm

Last night I fell asleep before I got my mask on. It is the first and only time I've slept without my mask in 15 months of therapy. I've often said here that I feel so much better, but that I wished I still had a bit more energy. I can now tell you that today I feel and remember the PRE-cpap fatigue!!! and I will take the not quite optimal energy over how I feel today anytime

New Rule: DO NOT CLOSE EYES EVEN FOR 'JUST A SECOND' BEFORE MASKING UP!
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

I haven't had one of those nights yet, but so many times I wish I could just nod off without worrying about filling the tank and donning the mask and all that. It is so tempting to do, but I know the consequences would be as you have suffered. Nevertheless, it is so tempting to want to fall asleep sans le mask.

Yes I bet this was a real reminder what it's like before the hose! Haven't done a full night without it yet, however one night after a bathroom break delayed putting it back on for just a "minute". Woke up the next morning and felt terrible all day. So even a half night without it was not good, and a real reminder how important it is not to let that happen again. Hopefully when you wake up tomorrow you'll feel a whole lot better!

I have a mental checklist; if I leave anything out, it makes more steps.
So many things to remember: I really need to write it all down. . .
watch, clothes, hearing aid, glasses, pills, insulin, eye drops, fill tank, lights out, put on mask, turn on machine.
oops. . . . . .good night kiss!

First, I wish I could have a good talk with Self before going to sleep (NOTE: I needed this talk last night. Mask was on for only 13 minutes. I have no idea why.) something like this.... "Self DO NOT take mask off during the night. You will ONLY feel lousy the next day. Are there any questions???"

Second, what I'm trying to get out the habit is when I finally feel my body fall asleep, then I mask up. Many a time that has been a BIG mistake!!!

Try the reverse.

I usually don't wait until I'm tired or sleepy to mask up. I've noticed that most nights now when I put the mask on, it's then that I get drowsy and want to turn over and go to sleep. It's gotten to where putting the mask on is a signal for my body to sleep.

Me too! I'm usually asleep within a few mins following maskup and lie down, rare that I'm not.

I usually nod off while reading in bed. My plan is to mask up before I pick up my book (I'm getting my machine on Wednesday). Would while I'm reading be a good time to use the ramp feature? I don't want to wait until I'm drifting off to remember the mask, but I have a lot of centrals when I'm trying to get to sleep so I'm not sure if turning on the ramp is a good idea. I want to get into a good routine right away so that it becomes automatic to get the machine ready and mask up.

I always wait until I get tired before I go to bed and I always mask up before my head hits the pillow. I am so new to this that I don't need to remember what the pre-CPAP days were like... real BAD!

Teknomom, I use the ramp feature on my machine for 20 min. (ramp up from 8 cmH2O to my min. treatment setting of 11 cmH2O) but I don't have any issues during the first phase of my sleep (besides loud snoring in my pre CPAP treatment and chin strap days).

My first thought on your use of ramp considering your centrals are early while going to sleep is that centrals usually occur in most people at higher cmH2O settings, so using ramp might be beneficial. Please wait for others to chime in though because I am still using training wheels with all of this OSA/CPAP stuff.

Last Tues. night I didn't mask up.

................it's not that I forgot.
I was trying to sleep on the floor
in the SanFran airport.

I really didn't worry about it too much, though.
Mask or no mask, there wasn't any sleeping happening.

I've been doing this so long now I think there's a Pavlovian connection. Like one of Pavlov's dogs, it seems any time I put something on my face it makes me go to sleep.

I almost fell asleep at my workbench one day while sanding some wood and I think it's because I wore a dust mask.

If you plan to read for a bit before sleeping, then don't even bother with the ramp, after a few breaths the machine settles down and starts to lower the pressures and adjust to your breathing anyway. I never use the ramp.

I do this also. I'm a big reader and will read late into the night. but if I need to get to sleep, I will mask up and keep reading. Not long after, I am dropping the book and snoozing.
