Nasal Aire II - Side Sleeping

Post by Aswab » Thu Mar 02, 2006 4:18 pm

Second of the questions.

I am searching for the perfect mask, like so many of you. When I first started looking I was fascinated with the NAII because of a profound claustrophobic reaction to one of the "Comfort" masks Rested Gal admires so much. The NAII seemed to be almost "not there". What has stopped me from pursuing it has been the fact that I am a side sleeper exclusively and the area over by my temple and over the ear can get very sensitive at times (particularly on the left). How hard is the hose coming over the ears. Is it springy or does it collapse a little?

As a side/stomach sleeper, I can tell you that it is well worth the money to try. (Better is insurance company is paying)

NAII was my first mask, and now have a collection of six, and I think it is still my favorite.

It seems to respond to my every need and then every couple of weeks I need a break and do another for a couple of days. I always go back to the NAII.

I am due for a new mask shortly from insurance company, and am going to get another.

Aswab, I think pressure plays an important roll in whether one likes the Nasalaire or not because it can be quite noisy at higher pressures. I'm exclusively a side sleeper, and I used Nasalaire for 3 years, so feel I'm justified in making these comments and observations:

It's a prong interface, meaning it must fit snugly into your nares. If my nostrils didn't flare out while wearing the device, it would leak. I never had a sore nose, but many do get sores.

The hose over the ears is semi-soft plastic tubing, most people don't experience pain from it. But, you can hear the air going through the tubing since it is so close to the ear.

The exhaust ports are right under the nose blowing down and out. It will blow at your bedpartner or on your arms. Also, you cannot let your covers or pillow get close to the ports - or it will be noisy.

I did get leaks and noises if I tried to sleep too much on my side - never felt like I truly got comfortable in a modified side sleeping position.

The Nasalaire isn't horrible (the II is practically the same as the I): I did use it for 3 years. But that was before I tried Aura. Personally, I will never go back to Nasalaire. If I couldn't use my Aura, I would try the Breeze, and next the Swift.

Hope my observations may help a little.

David, I know you were typing that with a big grin on your face and tongue firmly planted in cheek.

"Comfort" is a cuss word in my book, when it comes to cpap masks.

I'm an exclusive side sleeper also, but I've not found it a problem using my NA II. I alternate between using the NA II and the Breeze. Both have their little quirks but I've adjusted well to both. I have made a "sleeve" of sorts to use on my NA II just to make it even more comfortable, but it's not bad on it's own by any means....at least in my opinion. Good luck in your pursuit!

I'm a Nasalaire II convert and a side sleeper, (and stomach sleeper, back sleeper, all around flop all over sleeper). There are so many ways you can wear this mask that it's not even funny. Just look on their web site. The swift wasn't for me but might be good for those that know what side they want to sleep on and dont turn over. Haven't tried the aura or everrest pillow thingy.

Aswab,

I'm a NAII user and definately a side sleeper.............one side or the other all night long. Frankly of the three masks I've tried, I like it the best, and with my recent "numbers", it's obviously part of a working equation. After I got used to having what felt like two cigars stuffed up my nostrils, it's become reasonably comfortable. My only complaint is I'm a mouth-breather and I've had to come up with the dangest array of straps and pads to keep the old chin up and mouth closed. (None of which is comfortable.) I've not tried the Aura, but understand it has a good following. If I tire of the NAII, I'd probably try that next.

I had the Nasalaire II before the Hybrid.
Fantastic little mask. Could sleep in any position.

Funny that this old post was bumped up, I was just looking at this mask last night at cpap.com... Was wondering how other side sleepers did with it.....
