First Week With CPAP

Post by rickypicky » Fri Nov 18, 2011 11:46 am

According to the S9 Elite, I should be doing great. My AHI last night was between 1 and 2, and during the week has for the most part been under 5.

I get the Green Smiley Face every morning as well.

The only problem is I wake up each morning feeling tired. I am waking up during the night quite often but I usually fall back to sleep quickly.

Am I missing something? Shouldn't I be feeling rested in the morning?

Hi Rick,

What CPAP pressure were you prescribed? Is that the pressure your Elite is set for?

Do you have EPR "full time" turned on? If so, what EPR setting are you using?

Also hour many hours of sleep do you normally get? And do you remembering waking often?
Any other issues....pain..insomnia...meds....other health problems? Anything that might affect how you feel or sleep?

Low AHI doesn't guarantee immediate results...in fact doesn't guarantee any improvement for some people.
But it is a starting point and while one week isn't very long at all..might as well start your detective work now.
It could be that you just need some time but it wouldn't hurt to eliminate any other factors while you are giving it time.

If I understand your question, the CPAP pressure is set to 10 and I believe that is what was prescribed for me. The "ramp" time is set to 10 minutes, so it goes from 4-10 in 10 minutes.

I don't know what "EPR" setting I am using but do recall it being something that I can set via the menus. What do you suggest I set it to?

I've been getting about 7 hours sleep each night. I have been waking up probably about 6-7 times during the night, but usually get back to sleep pretty quickly (I think).

No pain to speak of.

Meds - I take Zantac (heartburn) and Zirtec (allergies) and am on a statin for lowering cholesterol.

Ricky--

Waking up several times a night is quite normal your first couple weeks of CPAP, which can make you feel really tired. However once your body/mind get used to wearing an alien on your face you will see improvments on how many times you wake a night.

Good luck and welcome to the club!

Fragmented sleep for any reason will sure mess with how a person feels the next day. Any idea why you wake up?

EPR is Exhale Pressure Relief. Each setting is a per cm drop in pressure while you exhale to make your breathing easier. Setting of 3 is the most drop 3 cm drop in pressure so from you 10 cm to a 7 cm during exhale.
Setting of 2 is 2 cm drop, etc.

Might be a good idea for you to see a video about your machine so you understand it a bit more.
http://www.cpaplibrary.com/machines.html

There is software available to let you see more than you see on the machine along with the provider manual.
Look in UncleBob's signature here. memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=38643

And for a video on how to use the software http://montfordhouse.com/cpap/resscan_tutorial/

It may just take some time for the body to heal but frequent wake ups will mess with how you feel because they interrupt the normal sleep cycle stages that the body needs to recoup. Since you have to give it time anyway...might as well use the time to thoroughly understand your machine and your reports.
