Cleaning Regime

Post by ChadSnoozer » Fri Mar 03, 2006 2:06 pm

Hello everyone. First time poster here.

I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea during the last couple of months, and received my equipment today.

My insurance got me a ResMed S8 Escape, and I opted to use the Mirage Swift nasal pillows.

The question I had was what sort of cleaning procedure do you all normally do? I'm somewhat of a clean freak, and want to work out some sort of system for keeping the equipment clean. I've been looking around (which is how I found these useful forums) and saw some concentrate cleaning materials.

I use the term procedure because, in my head I envision something like wakeing up, taking the equipment into the bathroom on the way to the shower, dropping the nasal piece into a cleaner, showering, taking the nasal piece out, and letting it dry. It may not be that cut & dry, but it's easier for me to maintain if I can work out a schedule.

Thanks for any suggestions, and I'm open for any other cpap suggestions you have.

I try to keep it simple. I found that the rubber end of the 6' hose fits perfectly on to my sink faucet. I keep the hose and headgear attached. Every day, I just stick it on the faucet, put some baby shampoo on my fingertips to clean my nasal pillows, and turn on the faucet to flush the hose and pillow clean.

Then, once a week, I take off the hose cover, and disconnect the headgear from the long hose. The headgear goes in the shower with me for a good shampoo. I have a heated hose, and you're not supposed to get the outside wet. so I put a few drops of shampoo in the hose and fill it with water. I then connect the two ends of the hose together to form a circle, and swish the water around in the hose. I bought the connector from Cpap.com. I think it was about $4.00. I then hook the hose up to the sink and flush it out. Then hang it all up to dry.

Sometimes I use a liquid anti-bacterial soap, like Dial, but most of the time it's just baby shampoo. I found no need to get fancy. Works for me.

Great Tips! Wow, best I've heard yet. I too have discovered that the hose fits nicely on the faucet but did not think about leaving the interface on. I'll try that.

Showering with the headgear ain't bad either. I am not a clean freak, not even close, in fact I am a bit of a pig but I do want to keep the interface and system clean, it only makes sense.

Thanks

You're supposed to clean these things?

What about nasal pillows?

Using anti bacterial soap will break down your interface fast. Soaking once a week in vinegar and water is a lot easier and all that you need to do. Hasthe added benefit of reviving your rubber and making your interface last for a very long time. Disassemble your mask and clean too much and you will be buying new masks a lot.

I use J&J's baby shampoo. Does vinegar contain any acid? Sorry for the dumb question.

Vinegar is acetic acid.

Fairly dilute ascetic acid, I must say. If you've ever opened up a jug of the 100% stuff...it ain't like vinegar!
