S9 AUTOSET 1-MONTH RENT W/BUY OPTION?

Post by lizgav » Sun Nov 06, 2011 8:44 am

Hello – newbie here. Husband fortunate to get an Rx for an auto CPAP from his internist, without the $4000 sleep study. After reading much here and elsewhere, as well as talking to a few med equip reps, we’re thinking our best bet would be the ResMed S9 Autoset (with humidifier and nose-pillow mask). Don’t want to shell out the cash only to find it doesn’t do the job, but will buy it if it works! Suggestions, anyone? Thanks!

PS Can’t find a rental for this specific unit.

Since you're paying out-of-pocket, you might want to see what's being offered on Craigslist. You can do a nationwide search at:

ResMed S9 Autoset
ResMed AirFit F20 mask with headgear

Buying a brand new cpap machine like the S9 Autoset is a bit like buying a car - once you take it off the lot and start to put miles (hours) on it, its value decreases. For that reason, I don't think any DME would do a 1 month rental of a new S9 Autoset. If you call around you might find a DME who has a used one that someone has used for a few months and given back, and would be willing to rent to you or sell at reduced price.

Other resources are Craigslist (as previous poster indicated) or secondwindcpap.com for purchase of used cpaps. They often have gently used machines with low hours, that have been tested to be in good working order. Craigslist is little more risky because there are many scammers; I would only buy a cpap on Craigslist if the seller was within driving distance of my home and I could see and turn on the machine before I bought it.

Good luck.

Here's a place that sells slightly used or open box units. http://www.secondwindcpap.com/Used_CPAP.html.

Thank you all! Wasn't aware of nationwide craigslist; had only checked a couple of local ones without success. Will try to take necessary precautions re scammers; would only rent first and then buy if it works. Will also check out secondwindcpap.com, and call around to some more med equip suppliers. Thanks again!

I just PMed you this:

I suggest that you contact Jo xxxx who is the clinical manager at xxxxxxxx, inc. at xxxx. I assume that you have an Rx. Ok to tell her that Mr. xxxxx, her client from xxxxxxxx suggested it.

Frankly, I don't know what the S9 Autoset could tell you in one month. As I mentioned before, I tried to auto titrate myself for 6 months and find an effective pressure that gives me a low AHI, but I could not. My PSG from a year ago prescribed a 6 to 7 cmH20 on a plain CPAP. But now I am on the APAP with pressures of 14 cm max and 8 cm min.

See my posts here:

p.s. Jo (who is my RT), knows that I am not happy with the seults so far of my treatment and that I plan to see a new sleep Doc in mid Dec.
