Hose Dilemma...Cat Stew anyone?

Post by Perrybucsdad » Thu Nov 03, 2011 8:18 am

Okay, I know we have had other threads on how to keep pets away from the CPAP device, so I don't want to rehash all those thoughts. My personal thoughts are that animals should not be in the bedroom, but my wife disagrees. Apparently them pawing at the door (they have no claws) is more destructive than them eating my hose.

So the problem I have is now I have about 12 tiny holes over about 18 inches of my climetline hose. All of these holes are in the plastic and not by the wire, so that is good. I'm thinking I should be okay to just use some electrical tape and give two tight, but not constricting, wraps around the tube to seal these? Should I also consider adding a very small dab of silicon sealant on each hole just as a secondary insurance to combat leaks? I'm not talking a huge gob of stuff, as I wouldn't want this to occlude the hose and reduce its effectiveness.

Thoughts?

Hi Perrybucsdad

What you suggest sounds like a good idea, and no harm in making sure.

But have you worked out a way to prevent it from happening again ?

That is, without getting clobbered by your wife for offering her cat stew

You were joking ?????

cheers

Mars

Mar's... yes, I was kidding about the Cat Stew... I kind of am find of the little monsters and I bet cat would be stringy and tough.

Nan... I had a hose cover on it and this still happened. They play with the damn thing. The simple solution is no cats in the bedroom.

Why do I have a strange feeling this will end up with me sleeping on the couch and my wife with the cats in the bedroom.

Have you tried behavior correction with your cats? I have used a spray bottle full of water and when I catch my cat doing something she isn't suppose to do I spray her with water in the face. Not harmful but it gets the point across.

As for your hose I would skip the tape and just use a small amount of silicone sealant.

Good luck,
Rome

I use that silicone tape on my tubing at the business ends to stop them splitting like they do so soon after first use. It's lightweight and very elastic and I get a really good air/water tight seal in a couple of turns and it adheres to itself and easily removable if needed.

Cheers,
xena

Answer number two.......put the hose in a drawer during the day. Out of sight out of mind .

Don't kid about cat stew, when I was a teenager (many years ago) our favorite restaurant was a small chinese place down the road. About 6 months after we started going there, the place was shut down by the health department because they were using CAT as their meat.......................no wonder the cat population in our neighbourhood was going down---- puke.. puke... puke!

Nan... it doesn't happen during the day as no animals are allowed in our room. The door is closed. My better half keeps the door open at night, and that's when it happened. The hose is actually hung up on my closet during the day anyhow (I generally rinse the hose each morning and let it hang all day)

Xena... what silicone tape are you talking about? Are you talking about the 3M stuff that they use on pets? That has tons of holes in it. The more I think about this the more I am thinking of using Teflon tape (like you use for water fittings) with two wraps, and then over wrap this with electrical tape. Both have good elasticity and should seal off just fine and should not occlude the hose. I just bought the Climateline as well, so I don't want to just go buy a new one.

Since your kitties have no claws, I assume the holes are from fangs.
What do they hate the taste or texture of? -(-that won't irritate you)
Silicone on the holes sounds like a good idea as long as you use food grade or aquarium sealant;
as anything else will outgas toxic chemicals.
Even with food or fish-safe silicone, you need to allow full curing time before using it on your air hose.
Good luck.

I'll see your cat and raise you EIGHT (that's right eight) Miniature longhair Dachshunds. I have a whole pack of little hairy wieners running around. I'm gonna end up on a TV show someday, and not in a good way...

Next time, adopt a retired racing greyhound. They don't go after the hose!
