Card Reader
My DME called yesterday asking about which mask to order, as I have yet to find anything that will fit right in over a year. Luckily I have a good DME.
I asked him about software and a card reader for my resperonics s8 vpap st. He said he has a card reader @ $99, and can cut me a disc of the software. Do I need to get the reader to fully comprehend, or can I get by with the #'s on the results screen?
For the last 4 nights I have had AHI's & AI's of 41.6/16.9, 53.4/21.8, 48.6/23.4, and 21.2/7.2. I know this is not telling you much, my pressures are 18/14/bur12

Re: Card Reader
I find having the detailed data very, very helpful.

Re: Card Reader
Just for info, you have a Resmed machine, get the correct software and reader needed. Jim

Re: Card Reader
The software gives you a higher level of info. You have to learn to interpret it.
In particular, the software will tell you when events happened, gives you more info on the type of apnea, how long the event lasted (I think), etc.
Did you get this machine recently?
For those of you with ResMed experience, isn't the S8 VPAP ST obsolete? Isn't there an S9 VPAP ST that would record a whole lot more info? Is this user paying new price for an outdated machine?

Re: Card Reader
If you're buying out of pocket, I'd ask if he couldn't do better than $99. I have heard (though I have not personally been quoted) that they go for about $45 through a DME. You can find them on-line, usually from Israel or Hong Kong, for about $99. So, your DME is a better deal than that. Now, we're talking the "official" ResMed branded reader here. You can get a generic for less, but it can turn into a huge hassle. I'd get the ResMed branded reader (I have both), even for $99 and save yourself some headaches. You can download the software on this forum (see Uncle Bob's Signature Line) free. I think his link takes you to the ResMed site. You can find it on the ResMed site, but it takes some digging. I only mention this because the latest version is 3.14. Don't know what your DME has.
I recommend you get the software and reader. People on this forum can help you get your AHI/AI down.

I am sure they are very scarce even the generic ones and it might be $99 without more leg work / hassles / making the card reader grid to fit is an excellent price

Re: Card Reader
The last time I checked with ResMed (July of this year) they were still available through ResMed's normal distribution system. That is, through your DME but not online. IIRC, the ResMed part no. is 22207. You can call ResMed's customer service to verify the availabilty. I did get one from my DME last June, but it was not a purchase so no pricing info. A fellow forum member told me he purchased one from his DME in California this summer for $45. That said, I agree with Jules that paying $99 to avoid the hassles would be worth it. Of course, paying less and avoiding the hassles would be even better.

Re: Card Reader
If your DME has one, $99 is not outrageous. I tried buying online several months ago from an ebay seller in Israel for $80-they took my money,I never got the item and they wouldn't respond to my emails. Paypal eventually refunded me. After that a seller from Hong Kong showed up on ebay, but when I tried to contact the seller, it was the same e-mail addresss as the one who frauded me. Someone on cpaptalk posted a link for an ACS Smart Card Reader available online for about $40 and it works like a charm. When using a generic reader you have to make a custom cardboard guide to read the resmed cards, though. My understanding is that you also need an older model non-CCID compliant reader, which they only had a couple of left when I ordered. Hopefully your DME has the Resmed cards, too, as they are becoming hard to come by. Good luck.
