I have been on cpap for 16 years and sleep 9 to 10 hours a night, and uninterrupted even to pee since having a rotorooter job. Sleep lab was the best thing I ever did.

Before CPAP I slept all night with no wake-ups. I never dreamed any either that I could remember.

Since starting CPAP 11 weeks ago, I wake-up every 90 minutes to 3 hours at a time. I have to "go" too. I also have began having nightmares now. The only dreams I remember are terrible and they can stop any time as far as I care. I am tired every day and wonder WTF all these others are talking about. CPAP has not been very helpful to me, , , , yet. I am not giving up though and keep using the machine every time I sleep. I am perfect for compliance so far and have no plan to change that. I want to feel all the good things others talk about.

I have no real issues with CPAP. I do not get leaks or freak out from having my face covered. I got used to the pressure very quickly in only a few nights. I did worry about my wife seeing me at first and tried to hide from her or have the light off before masking up. She knew I was having trouble with this and asked me if she could "try it on" one night. We laughed so much and took pics. She even asked me to turn it on so she could feel the pressure. That cured me and I have no problem putting the mask on in front of her now.

I started messing with my humidity control and found that less humidity yields better AHI numbers for me. I do see a real improvement in my AHI since starting CPAP so I think it is working. It would be nice to sleep though.
Mowdoc, Congrats to you for sticking with it and having such a good attitude about it. And I must say that I smiled when I heard you describe your wife's action. She is a very perceptive and supportive person!

I still wake up during the night, just not as often. Since July when I first started using the mask, I think I've slept thru the night once. I do sleep better and deeper though. I can tell because I'm not as exhausted during the day. Today, in fact, I really feel good! I suppose it's going to take more time to always feel good during the day. Just so I see some improvements, I'm happy.

Actually there is documented medical reason for nocturia and its relation to sleep apnea. With the apnea events, stress is put on the heart..we all know that. When the heart is stressed it produces a stress hormone with a long name that I can't ever remember and this hormone goes to the kidneys and it tells the kidneys to go into overdrive...kidneys work harder and more urine is produced.
I almost wish you had not informed me of that.
Good luck on your therapy. Hope your road will have minimal bumps but if you do have some bumps just remember that you aren't alone and someone else has likely had same bumps and worked through it.
Thank you for the kind thoughts. God bless you!

I can count on one hand (if I counted) how many times I've slept through the night - but it's usually restroom related. I'm told the trick is to stop drinking water enough hours before bedtime.

Once I get to sleep, I usually do sleep through the night. OK, so I get up to hit the head once or twice, but I go right back to sleep. Of course, that wasn't my problem -- I just snored all night long & hubby was the one not sleeping.

Hope you can find the right mix of pressure, mask, humidity, and ambient conditions. Until you do, your sleep will be less than perfect. But, hey, any improvement over frequent apneas is better than none.

My sleep is so much less interrupted now as before; which is not to say I don't awaken in the middle of the night--but it's much less traumatic. I generally roll over and go right back to sleep,

umm, well, yes and no. 1st night as a hosehead my 8-10 times up to pee stopped, never to recur. The first 4 nights I only slept during my 45 min ramp sessions 'cause I woke up every time my pressure went to my CPAP setting. 5th night forward thru next 16-17 months, I slept 8+ hrs each night uninterrrupted. Then, I backslid into apnea. While I initially thought it was strictly drug reaction and that may have contributed, unbeknownst to me I had begun losing therapy air via tiny puffs of air escaping via loose lips Found this forum, learned what was happening, got aloaner APAP & recording pulse ox for 4 nights from my sleep doc, began a campaign to get an APAP, bought a Hybrid -- then, I started sleeping better even if still fragmented by frequent wakeups. Bought an APAP and my sleep quality improved dramatically. Read Braverman's book, The Edge Effect, started taking a supplement based on my scores and wakeups went to 1 or fewer each night and then just to turn over (I sleep with almost no movement and get stiff & achy from sleeping in one position). If/When it occurs, this wakeup is typically beween 4:30-5:30AM following a dream. Like many here, I have lots of REM in the early morning.

I vary from 6.5 to 8.5 hours a night, mostly 7 something. I find melatonin to be helpful, along with waiting to get sleepy before going to bed. Melatonin seems to take an hour to an hour and a half to work for me. Once I'm asleep, I usually sleep soundly all night after two years on CPAP.

The right mask and the right pressure settings help tremendously. I use a nasal pillow mask. If I set my high limit pressure too high, I will sometimes wake up when it hits the max. 9-10.5 seems to the the sweet spot for me, even though my best numbers are AHI of 4-6. Going to 11 or higher results in EPI, leaks, wakeups, and higher numbers in AHI.

The sleep doctor pushed an Ambien prescription on me after my first study, which I never took. I refused it and he told me to take the prescription, saying that I would need it to get used to the equipment. Melatonin worked just fine.
