S9 noise question

Post by Brian2 » Sat Oct 22, 2011 2:52 am

Well i had my first night with my new resmed S9 auto. All went well except for a noise coming from the machine each time I exhaled. It sounds like a wheezing/whooshing/squeaking noise. If I exhaled very slowly and carefully the noise disappeared. I tried it without the humfidifier and the noise was still there. Is this a problem that anyone else has experienced

Hi Brian. Glad you had a good first night with your machine. You said you have an S9 Auto and you have an S8 in your profile. I do sometimes experience that noise. It could be a couple of different things. Is your machine brand new? Take the filter out and put back in. See if that helps. What is your EPR set on? I notice a difference in sound with different EPR settings. Also, I use nasal pillows and if not seated exactly right or if time to change them out, I will hear some air noise. I use the S9 Auto on a regular basis and just purchased an Intellipap Auto for backup and travel. Intellipap has a different sound than the S9. I can hear more of the inhale, exhale cycling on that machine. Still not what anyone would call loud, but it has its own unique sound and rhythm.

Thanks for the quick reply Mimi. I just changed to the S9 Auto last night for the first time and haven't thought to update by profile. I tried adjusting the EPR and it made no difference, but i will look at the filter. many thankss

Where was the hose last night?

It's possible that some (or all) of that exhale noise was conducted noise that got into your head via soundwaves being transfered from the hose to the covers or bedpillow and then to your skull and into the middle and inner ear.

I've written about conducted noise on my blog. You can find out more about dealing with conducted noise by clicking here.

Hi Brian2,

My S9 very occasionally does a very high pitched wheeze with exhale for a few minutes when it first starts. As it's so intermittent (perhaps once every couple of months) I've also thought that it could be conducted sound or my nasal pillow fitting. You're not going crazy.

Happy Sleeper

Mine did that more when EPR was at 3 than it does now at 1 (on my way to 0). In any case I know the sound and it bothers me. I use a fan for background noise but can still hear it. Then I cut a hole in my nightstand to run the power cable out and placed the S9 in the top drawer. When I turn it on I close the drawer almost all the way, leaving it open just enough for the hose to come out. I don't hear the machine at all now. When I wake up I just turn it off and put the mask and the hose in the drawer and close it. Works well.

I was actually going to start a thread on this type of noise, given it is a big issue with my Intellipap lately. the differnce being my noise is on inhallation. Ive put the whole machine under the bed and that cuts it down to an acceptable level (for me, with the wind in my ears). It might have someting to do with my "fried but not toasted" thread damage, and I am tempted to take the machine apart and have a look. its definately in the machine, is less but not nothing when the humidifier is not in use, and is less at less minimum pressure on auto/Smartflex. but it is a seriously bad noise for a machine to make (it would drive a partner, if I had one, insane I am sure). I might call it the "tracheotomy sound"

I have had the exhale noise you describe with the Resmed S9 Autoset since I got mine one year ago. After one month I went back to my DME and let them hear it and they gave me another Autoset. The second one didn't seem to make the sound in the office but as soon as I got home it sounded exactly like the first one. Many people have reported and even posted a recording of the sound. Like you say if you breathe out slow you can make it not happen but the noise occurs contantly on exhale with my normal breathing pattern. I keep the machine on a stool down low on my side of the bed but my wife can still hear it. Luckily for both of us it is not loud enough to keep either of us awake and it actually quieter than the Respironics M-series Auto that I had previously.

The only noise I here coming from my S9 is a rhythmic breathing sound kind of like a woosh. and I only here that when there is no other sound in the room. I sleep with a fan most nights so I usually never here it.
