requesting tips for the occasional sweaty nights

Post by NJTimGeorge » Sun Feb 26, 2006 8:01 am

Hi all.

I've been a CPAP user for about 2 years. It's been an excellent experience.

I have allergies during seasonal changes. At these times, I wake up several times a night. I need to remove my mask and wipe the sweat off.

Anybody have tips for getting a better night's sleep in this situation?

Are you sure it's sweat? If its inside the mask it would more likely be condensaton of the moisture coming through the tube. Especially if you are using a humidifier. Pressure and/or cooling will wring moisture out of the air. Answer to that is covering the tube with a fleece or blanket type of fabric (I tried that) or go for the gusto and get the Aussie heated hose. It works.

My problem was night sweating in general, but especially around the head for a number of years. Turns out to be from my acid reflux. Doc put me on omerprazole and the sweating is gone.

I also had acid reflux--was a surprise, as I didn't show the usual symptoms. I now use a foam wedge or extra pillows to raise my upper body a bit more, and try to avoid eating too late. I'm not sure that acid reflux had anything to do with my night sweats, though. They seemed to go away after I got everything else fine tuned, and started catching up on sleep.

Thanks for the replies.

I actually was wondering about condensation.

I'll try wrapping the tubes.

WOW....acid reflux is the cause or contributes to night sweats.....
I have been asking my Dr. for years about why I sweat at night, I keep it cool in my bedroom but on occasions I still sweat.
Isn't this form great, I came here for CPAP info and find out about my night sweats....
What about that RX.... the purple pill.....does it work ??
And big hugs and thanks.....

OSA/xPAP/Acid Reflux?

Post by Aswab » Tue Feb 28, 2006 11:48 am

This is an interesting thread to me. I have heard and read that Acid Reflux can be a symptom of OSA and well as it's own problem. I have found that since I have been xPAPing the reflux is much, much better and I have hopes of reducing the meds and returning the bed to it's normal position (I have it raised about 8").

Can anyone else share their experience with Reflux and xPAP, pro or con?

I have horrible reflux and GERD. I take 2 40 mg Nexium a day, plus another acid reducer to fill in when those don't work. I also had undiagnosed sleep apnea for years. I think the apnea definintley increased the reflux. Or maybe the reflux increased the apnea.
Anyway, I've been using my APAP since last fall, and I am better. Not over it , but better. It helped that I lost 40 pounds, too! I was able to lose the weight when I started sleeping better! It all goes hand in hand.
Never knew about the sweats and apnea, though! Interesting!
And yes, the purple pill works for most.

I used to suffer nocturnal acid refulx 3-4 times a week on average. The last time I had that problem wsa the night before I began CPAP, over 6 months ago. The only thing that really changed for me was the CPAP.

The conclusion seems obvious!

Thanks, that was my sense of the matter. I have not had any reflux since I began xPAPing as well. I am still taking meds and still have the bed raised. I am going to wean myself off the meds and then see if I can lower the bed.

Thanks for the feedback.
