Is it alright to nap without your cpap?

Post by LonghornGary » Thu Oct 06, 2011 3:48 pm

I've always been a Sunday afternoon napper after church and chores while watching the NFL. I saw a couple of posts that recommended trying to always wear your mask, is this generally the consensus line of thinking?

I don't, because even though my non CPAP AHI is 10ish, I feel like garbage anytime I nap and wake up without using it.

Longhorn...I'm new at this, but I use mine any time I lay down and even think I might get a chance to sleep. I'm a Sunday afternoon napper myself (or used to be!) and sometimes I got my best sleep during those naps, so now, when I get the chance I hose up!

Do you like getting choked for an hour? Living like you are part way up mount Everest?

Sleep is sleep whether you do it in your bed at night or on the couch during the day.

To reiterate what everyone else has said, yes, always always always wear your mask when sleeping or napping.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

you are going to further damage your organs!
I get headaches when I do that and even worse brain fog; I know it feels better when you sleep without high pressure when falling asleep but in reality you are hurting your body

Just how long can you hold your breath?

Re-written this way - "The general consensus at cpaptalk.com recommends you always use your cpap anytime you sleep. Even if it's for 5 minutes".

Do you skip your seatbelt when you're just running to the corner store? Your chances of dying in an accident are just as great whether you get behind the wheel to go 3 blocks or a cross-country trip.

Same with CPAP. You are experiencing serious organ damage every apnic moment, and if you need CPAP that means you have a LOT of apnic moments when you sleep.

Wear your seatbelt.
Wear your CPAP.

The other day I decided to take a little nap on the couch -- sitting up -- head back. My wife was reading her Kindle and I told her to watch and if I had any episodes (not breathing) to wake me up. It was only a few minutes and she woke me up. Apnea is apnea -- sleeping bed for the night or a little nap on the couch.

Not only do I agree with everyone else in saying NO, my personal experience is that I cannot nap without my PAP. If on the rare ocassion I start to doze in the lazyboy, I am "jolted" awake by an apnea. At that point, if I feel like I really need the nap - it's off to bed and the hose.

I don't ever remember a non-breathing episode during night sleeping before CPAP. I do not nap often but after 5 years on CPAP I dozed off. During that time I must have had an episode because I dreamed??? I could not breathe and I was panicking. It was a horribly scary moment. I'd recommend it always.
