Need chin strap recommendation
Need chin strap recommendation
I began cpap therapy a year ago and for nine months religiously tried every conceivable combination of masks/chin straps in an attempt to find a solution to my chin-dropping problem. I finally gave up.
My jaw drops as soon as I fall asleep breaking any FFM seal so FFM's just do not work for me. I've tried several. I've had the most success with the the Swift LT (nasal pillow) with a ruby chin strap but in order for the strap to work I have to place it forward on my head and pull the straps so tightly that it scrunches my face up horribly and is very uncomfortable. I've tried every thing I could think of including custom straps that I have made myself but, again, I had to adjust them so tightly in order to support my chin that they were unbearable. Simply taping my mouth shut does not work for me because when my chin drops, even though my lips remain sealed, my cheeks inflate which wakes me.
I know I should resume the therapy on a regular basis but when I go through a night of trying to use the mask again I decide it is just not worth it.
If anyone else out there has found a solution to a problem similar to mine, I'd appreciate it if you would pass it along.
John

Re: Need chin strap recommendation
Same problem here:
Whenever I find something (or a combination of things) that works,
it only works for a few days before my clever face figures its way around my chin retainer.
My best tactic is to keep switching things around to keep my face befuddled enough so I can sleep with therapy.
I have yet to try the Ultimate chin strap (someone please correct me if I'm wrong on the name)
or the jockey shorts elastic someone posted awhile back. --That would make DH die of laughter.

Re: Need chin strap recommendation
Hans Rudolf has a fullface mask with a very deep chin support. My chin couldn't slip out of that no matter how hard it tries. It's runs a lot further back under my chin than the fisher and paykel 431 that I also use.

Bought one; didn't work for me; gave it to a forum member. Thanks anyway.LSAT wrote:PAPCAP

Re: Need chin strap recommendation
I bought a Hybrid that claims to have a built-in chin support but it turned out to be nothing more than a flimsy piece of plastic that did nothing to support my chin. Are the support and the straps on the mask you reference strong enough to actually hold one's mouth closed? I pulled the Hans Rudolf up on cpap.com and I note a lack of vertical support straps which makes me think it's unlikely to hold my jaw/chin up.Bons wrote:Hans Rudolf has a fullface mask with a very deep chin support. Thanks.

You did not mention your tongue - have you trained yourself to keep it in the roof of your mouth with the tip right behind your front teeth? Using a chin strap I found this very helpful in keeping the chin up.
Re: Need chin strap recommendation
Apparently I have been unsuccessful in that regard. Frankly, I don't understand how you can train yourself to do something while you are asleep but, then again, I have read in other posts that members, like you, have been able to train themselves to do what you describe. I agree that positioning one's tongue as you suggest helps while I'm awake but I think as soon as I fall asleep my tongue relaxes to whatever position is natural.jimnsc wrote:You did not mention your tongue - have you trained yourself to keep it in the roof of your mouth with the tip right behind your front teeth? Re: Need chin strap recommendation
I am desperate so I just ordered the Ultimate Chin Strap............again. I ordered one a few months back but they never sent the strap. When I contacted them after a couple of weeks they told me my order had been misplaced so I told them to cancel the order.
If they send me a strap this time I promise to use it regularly for at least two weeks and then post an honest, detailed, unbiased review.
I really hope this thing does the job because nothing so far has worked satisfactorily for me and I really need to resume my therapy.
