New MAC with Intel Chip

Post by krousseau » Tue Feb 21, 2006 9:38 am

Anyone using Encor with the new iMac with Intel chip. Does it work right from the box or would I need other software/hardware (besides Encor reader). I have to get a computer that would run windows anyway-I'd like to stick with Apple.

That Intel chip does NOT mean you can run windows. In fact, VirtualPC for the mac won't RUN on a new machine with that Intel chip so you can't even install a windows operating system into VirtualPC.

Run Linux, get VMware, and run a version of Windows in the VM. hehehe
got all that?

Do NOT buy a new Mac with the Intel chip with the thinking that it will enable you to run windows programs. That is absolutely false.

Yardbird,
Will Encore Pro run on VM for the MAC?
Months ago someone said it won't because you can't get it to handly the smart card. Do you have any idea if that is so?

O.

I do not see any Apple operating systems listed in the supported Host System list for VMware. Therefore, unless there is documentation somewhere on VMware's site that states otherwise, I'd have to believe you can't install it on a Mac to begin with.

I use Ubuntu Linux as my operating system. I installed VMWare Workstation 5.5.1, created a VM (Virtual Machine) and installed WindowsXP into the VM. On THAT VM I can use the smart card reader connected to a USB port. So USB is working in the VM. I installed the card reader driver directly into the WindowsXP virtual machine. I do not have a linux driver for the card reader installed, so the VM is doing it all.

New MAC with Intel Chip

Well.....it turns out it is possible but NOT right from the box and NOT inexpensively. But after reading more about the iMAC Intel I'll have a hard time settling on anything else. Guess I'll take my son-in-law up on his offer of using his computer to run Encor. I use his computer w Windows and my daughter's w Linux and and live in a home with both PC (w/o windows) & Mac. Hope they will develop a universal application.
