PR System One Heated Humidifier Tank, Won't Fill

Post by Kathy G » Thu Sep 15, 2011 10:50 am

I can only fill my PR System One Heated Humidifier tank about 1/3 full before it starts leaking over the table. Is this normal or is it broken?

It may be normal. Are you filling it past the fill lines printed on the side? Beyond that point, it will over flow. I can't say that top line is 1/3 of the container's capacity, but you certainly cannot fill the container to the top.

If you are not filling it beyond the top line printed on the side and your machine is level, then no it is not normal for it to leak. Perhaps you have a crack in the container?

Try adding the water with the tank at a tilt with the end of the tank that is letting the water out (overflow opening), turned upwards a bit.
Then rotate the tank level to see how much water is in it. Mine has leaked out when I added water with the overflow end tilted down (even a bit) or I over filled.
Water level should not go above the top fill line or it will spill out through the over flow hole.

Guess I have to look for the overflow hole. I am only filling it to the 1/3 marked line, not the overall holding capacity.

The over flow hole is in the end on your left and in the middle if you are looking at the tank and see the words maximum fill line. That end goes into the slot in the machine first.

The tank is like a Chinese puzzle with compartments to prevent spillage of the water in the event the tank gets overturned. Darn near impossible to remove all the water just by shaking it out.

When adding water if that overflow hole is the least little bit tilted downwards then the water will flow out the hole and not go into the compartments.

I have the very same system. The first chamber I had did develop a crack. They crack easily. It's hard to spot the crack because I believe it cracks around the metal heating plate on the bottom. It would leak, and it would be wet/damp under my machine in the morning. This will also affect the humidified air if it leaks. I had mine replaced and now it is functioning properly. Call your DME and just tell them yours is defective and get a new one.

The max fill lines on mine are about 1/2 way up the side. If you are filling below the lines then leaking is not normal. Note that if you fill through the top there is something that the water can hit and splash/run out. I find that it is easiest to push the little tab in the hole on top and remove the top when filling.

You know it is possible there is a crack in it but if it only seems to leak profusely when adding water the overflow hole would be my first suspect. I fill my tank in the bedroom and usually on my bed. If it isn't level I have had a wet spot on the bed on more than one occasion and it not be full to the max line. I don't remove the top to add water. Quicker and easier just to pour it in the hole on the top. Course also makes it easier for me to make a mess.

I do not see a 1/3 marking on mine. Look at again and tell us what the line marking is.

Make that the 50% line.

I am doing a little differential diagnosis. I took it out filled to the 50% line and it is sitting on the kitchen counter. It seems to me if the tank has a leak, I will soon be seeing a puddle on the kitchen counter. Otherwise, it is just an orientation and slopover issue....

I highly recommend taking the tank OUT of the machine and placing it on a flat surface where you can easily see the markings as you fill it. That's the safest way to avoid damage to your machine, and if the tank itself is leaking you will notice it before it goes into the machine.

After sitting on the kitchen counter for an hour, no puddle or leaks. I will have to be more careful filling it. I do take it out of machine, but was obviously a bit cavalier with regard to the angle of fill. Thanks everyone.

That is what usually happens with me. I am not careful and it slops out a bit. I have had both floor puddles and wet spot in bed. I keep a small towel handy. It acts as a mess cleaner and the machine sits on it to reduce conductive noise as the table touches the bed, so a sound buffer also.

it does weird stuff if you fill it without removing the lid. (ie through the hole at the top) mine does this sometimes.....

I have never removed the lid. Way more work or trouble than I want to do just to add water.. I am lazy..
I just try not to miss the hole on top and I add a little at a time...tilt to level to check fill line and add a bit more if not quite enough.
