tubing change intervals?

I have had my original machine and tubing over for over a year. I just read on a site that tubing and water pans in humidifiers should be changed every 3 months . This was news to me. Does anyone have any opinion on this based on medical fact or is this just hype to sell more products? This was posted on a site that does sell cpap equiptment.
