I listened to my Dad snoring and stopping breathing at night all my life, and didn't nag him about sleep apnea for quite a while even after I started doing CPAP myself. I guess it was just programmed into my mind as "normal" and I didn't make the connection.

Cigarettes, Coca Cola. singing all were used but the best was a full bladder while driving.

I used to think everybody had to stop every hour to walk around the car to wake up. Now I ride motorcycle and can go almost three hours between gas stops without drifting off.

I knew I was in trouble when i started falling asleep not only at red lights but at stop signs while waiting for traffic to clear.

At work it took 15 minutes from the time i hit my desk to falling asleep, fortunately I had an understanding boss and when I was awake I could crank out production so they worked with me until I was able to have a UPPPPPPPP(how many P's in that acronym?) At that time i think there were about 3 masks and none worked for me.
always a hosehead, almost a hoser.

I guess I was fortunate to never fall asleep while driving with apnea (or if I did, I don't remember it ). The main problem I experienced when driving was that foggy mind, and seemingly a lack of peripheral vision. I was waiting at a red light, and when the light turned green I started to go. My wife screamed and I saw a guy go speeding through the intersection...he obviously ran the red light well after it turned red. Fortunately I stopped in time, but I'm sure that before I had the apnea I would have seen him. Another time I was backing out of a parking lot and she screamed again because someone was walking behind us. It took me at least a couple of second of looking before I saw him. Again, nothing happened, but these things never happened before the apnea.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Yeah, ameriken, I think I've been there before. That sick and dangerous place between sleep and wakefulness. Hopefully no more!

I'm significantly better than I was. I'm not falling asleep at inappropriate times and I am much more clear-headed. I am still experiencing some tiredness now and again. I've only been on my therapy for about a month now, so it may take some time for me to get adjusted. My AHI is down around 1-2 at the highest now, but I take that with a grain of salt because I have been recently experiencing some higher than expected mask leaks. I'm still trying to find a mask that fits my high pressure (17) and sleeping style (on my side).

Cubic: it took me 6-12 months to get out of my fog. I immediately had significant improvement at first... then it tapered off. But, if you are real sensitive to body, you should be able to see small improvments over a period of time. It took me several months to find the "right" mask for me. Keep looking. I've said before that I believe your sucess in beating sleep apnea depends on you finding the "right" mask for you.

I slept EVERYWHERE:
--In the dentist's chair--"you're so relaxed"
--in traffic--woke up just in time to avoid hitting a curb.
--at work --zoned out at my computer; and got written up.
--habitually leaned against the stall wall wall while seated in the john for a couple extra minutes.
--on vacation--During one car trip, DH pulled into a rest stop and right behind a semi tractor being towed backward--
and shook me awake!
