Resmed Quattro Mirage Mask Leakage

Post by donaldm823 » Fri Sep 09, 2011 6:17 am

I am brand new at this so I was wondering what is acceptable leak rate for my Resmed Quattro Mirage mask. Its coupled with my new Respironics System ONE Remstar PRO.

LAst nights leakage averaged 60 with my 20.0 pressure setting on the machine (not sure of the units)

Hello Donald, if your 95% leak rate was 60 you have some work to do but I was there myself and you came to the right place for advice. I post pics by making a jpeg and uploading to a Flickr, within flickr you can select "share" and then choose "BB Code", you copy that and paste it here. I delete the second line, you will know what that means when you try it. Use the "preview" button here to look at your post and with a little trial and error you will get it down fast.

As far as leakage goes a pressure of 20cm is a lot. A few things:

1) The Quattro is considered a "floating mask", that is if its too tight it will leak more. Sometimes with those masks loose is better but with a high pressure like yours that gets tricky.
2) It takes all of us time to "tame" a mask and full face masks like yours are harder to master than other types.
3) The silicone seal with your mask, once it gets moist will be almost impossible to hold a seal and will create "face farts" the sound of air getting through the seal. You want to find your advance user manual or ask people here how to control humidity settings if you have a humidifier with your cpap, a lower setting can help.
4) WASH YOUR FACE. Whenever I skip this step I have more leaks. Wash your face well and keep your mask washed as well.
5) Watch all videos on ResMeds site about your mask and practice putting it on based on those instructions. To be more comfortable with the mask you can wear it during the day watching a movie or listening to music. Its much easier to detect problems when you are not unconscious!
6) Look up the company "pad-a-cheek", they sell a mask liner made of cloth, its more comfortable and it really helps manage leaks. These liners made all the difference for me.

7) Use this forum!

I should also mention if you received your mask from a DME check to see if you have a 30 day window to exchange your mask. If you still have issues and are within that time frame head back in for a new mask. Another mask like the Quattro is the Quattro FX. Same type of mask but without the screw and pad on your forehead.

Check out fabric mask liners by RemZZZZs or gel mask liners by cpapseal.com (both available on their own sites or on Amazon. I have a pressure level of 17. I have tried the Remzzzz's with almost total success; however, since I am a restless sleeper, the initial leak stoppage success was sometimes interrupted and I would have to repostion the mask. So I am trying this gel type liner, hoping for complete's night results!

I use the Padacheek mask liner with my Mirage Quattro and it has helped a LOT...

I still tend to wear the mask more snugly than recommended but I watch my leak rate and do quite well with it.

Be patient and good luck
