Looks like it is going to poop-out as it did not intensify as was expected. Last check is that it will hit Cape Hatteras as a Cat 2 and that stretch of land is expected to further reduce its intensity. I think it will drop to a Cat 1 (74-95 mph) or just a tropical storm (73 mph). We frequently have winds that high here in the Englewood area with little or no damage.

The difference is that it is not gusts but sustained for hours. Plus the storm surge is just as bad with a cat 1 as a cat 3. A cat 1-2 hit Halifax a few years ago and between the winds and the storm surge it did major damage. Especially in the NE where all the trees are in full leaf - Maples and Oaks can't handle this wind. Also people in the NE are not prepared because they don't expect to see storms like this and don't understand the force .

Have already heard some thunder had seen the first band of rain clouds. I'm west of Virginia Beach area and expect high winds and 6-8" rain. Diesel generator is ready to run the well, fridge, freezer and TV. So we can shower, eat, and see what's happening with the storm. My hubby asked about CPAP and generator. We don't usually run it but a few hours at a time. However, we can easily lose power. I'll consider that one later.

Even gouging doesn't seem to work.

NYC will shutdown mass transit at noon Sat. (I think). CT will close the Parkway (this I gotta see) at midnight Sat. And the Gov. says where ever you are at midnight is where you should be staying, prob a good idea.

But we know how people who can't drive on a sunny day will go out, then get stuck in a closed and flooded road, and then expect someone to risk their life to save theirs <sigh>

I am just thankful this is not Labor Day Weekend.

I think that this is going to be a hard time for those without a backup power supplies for their Cpap machines.. just to name a few of the bad issues that some us are already facing...

NO NO NO The strength of a storm surge is directly proportional to the wind and wave speed less any natural obstructions such as reefs, etc.

Don't forget to get cash! In a power outage, the ATMs are also down.

In SE Florida, we had feeder bands raining on us yesterday. Today was clear and hot.

That's what I always thought, but tonight on the weather channel they said the surge with this storm has to do with it's large size - not wind speed. We had a lot of flooding in Mobile after Katrina and we were far from the eye. We were hit directly by hurricane Frederick which was a very strong Cat 3 and had no flooding with that storm. It's a puzzle to me. To me the second biggest danger in a hurricane is the large trees falling through your roof.

I tend to think the surge can cause more damage than wind alone (as was witnessed in Biloxi & NO) but not directly proportional to anything. Too many variables for my feeble mind.

Irene is scheduled to arrive at High Tide for CT & NY & LI which will increase the wave height before the wind & storm arrives.

But right now I think I'll go get some....

Sleep.
Hopefully by time I awake it will be bright and sunny (the calm after the storm).

Yes and the tides are higher then normal.

I wish the folks that are in line to get the storm well... and hopefully you can sleep well before (and after) the storm.

Hopefully all will be safe and sound.
