Hello,

I was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea last week and received my hardware last Friday. I'm not completely unfamilar with this disease as my father, mother and brother all suffer from it as well but I do have some general questions.

I've been given an S9 autoset, but I don't know if it's an Elite or escape model. how do I tell them apart? If I have an escape with limited data options, how do I go about getting the Elite model? I'm a data junkie.

Tonight will be my 6th night on the cpap, and I'm still having interrupted sleep and feel tired. Granted, I'm still a lot better off than I was before, skin color, mood and general energy is much better but I was looking forward to blissful, uninterrupted nights of sleep...how long is the typical "break in" time before a person gets "normal" sleep again on the cpap?

Thank you for this wonderful forum.

I have a data capable s9 Autoset. It says autoset on the top left side of the blower unit. The Elite is also a very good data capable machine. Here is what mine looks like. https://www.cpap.com/cpap-machine/resme ... ml?src=atg
Click on picture below the unit and it shows which one it is. You should be able to read Autoset.
When and if you need the software and the clinical manual send me a pm, or ask on this forum and you will be directed to the proper location.

If the machine has the word AutoSet on it, it's the full data, top of the line S9 AutoSet APAP. (There is not an S9 Auto Elite.) If the machine says Auto Escape on it, then it's got limited data and no leak data.

To get at that data, you need to find a post by Uncle_Bob. He's got the link to the ResScan software that is used to look at the data on a computer. You can also get pretty extensive data off the LCD---if the DME that set the machine didn't lock you out. If you want to look at the overnight data, you have to check the LCD before noon each day. Your DME should have given you a copy of the user manual for your machine. The user manual explains how to get into the Sleep Quality report and see the on screen data.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. Certainly far better than I had. (One week in, I was a walking basket case and feeling and looking much worse than before starting therapy.)

You might be lucky and be a "duck" and be sleeping blissfully through the night soon. But more typically most folks take quite a while to start sleeping through the night---as in several weeks to several months. And some of us never really seem to get all the way to night after night of "blissful, uninterrupted" sleep; but our sleep does usually get to the point where we wake up feeling decently rested and refreshed on most days. Eventually the number and lengths of the wakes should start to diminish as you get used to things. And as that happens, your sleep starts to feel much less interrupted.

Right now can you tell what is causing the wakes? If you are having specific problems that lead to wakes, let us know. No matter how bizarre it may sound, someone somewhere has experienced the same problem and amongst us, we probably can give you multiple things to try.

I'm a newbie from Worcester England. I used the oxygen/heart monitor device last night and have to wait for the results. I know it sounds bad but I hope I do have sleep apnea because otherwise it means more tests to find out why I'm spaced out/light headed/dizzy/tired all the time. I'm so worn out from fighting tiredness that it's getting me down a bit. If I have a kip because I'm so tired I sleep for at least 2 hrs.

Hope this forum helps me to make sense of it all x

Thanks robysue,

so far as interruptions go, most seem to be a result of becoming "aware" of the mask again, or I turn on my side and it starts leaking. I'm typically a side sleeper with my head and arm tucked into a pillow, but the mask gets in the way of that...finding something a side position that works with the mask is tough...I've been staying on my back for the most part with the cpap but it's not my normal position. Also, racing thoughts and feeling "awake" after putting the mask on have been a problem.

Where is the mask leaking? I prefer to sleep on my side and have almost no leaks now but it took a while to get the Quattro FX to the minimal leak stage. If you post where the leaks are happening, someone might have an idea of things to try to prevent the leaks.

It took a while to adjust to xpap but I find putting on the mask and starting the machine will sometimes help me go to sleep since there is now a firm xpap = sleep connection in my brain. I have other sleep problems so it doesn't always work but it is certainly nice on the nights that it switches my brain from awake to sleepy.

regarding leaks, I found that using a mask liner (I made from fleecy cloth from the fabric store) meant less leaks, and less tightness required for the mask, .

How did you end up with a full face mask? Did you have some sort of problems with mouth breathing or something?

I think a full face mask should only be used if you can't use a nasal mask for some reason.

leaks primarily occur when the side of the mask hits the pillow. I ended up with a full face mask because I occasionally find myself breathing through the mouth in the night.

I took advantage of a tip I read here and put a hanger on the wall over the bed and ran the hose through it. Sleeping was much more comfortable with the hose out of the way. Now if I could get the mask/hose connection to quit squeaking every time it turns, I'd be happy. I actually did pretty well last night, no interruptions and slept a good solid 7.5 hrs. thanks to the forum I was able to check my AHI number from the night and it was 0.5. Best sleep I've had all week.

You can get rid of the squeeks by putting a dab of oil...food kind..on the swivel and turn it to a fro a few times to distribute the oil to the swivel. As to the ffm still leaking, you can sleep on the EDGE of your pillow and let the mask hang over, that way nothing is in the way of the mask.
Hope this helps.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

are you aware you wake up in the night ? My partner says I stop breathing and I don't think the oxygen figure night will show I have it ! I'm just curious to know if you are aware if you do wake up ?
