Thanks.. Rested Gal

Post by rottyjohn » Wed Aug 24, 2011 8:04 am

My best night to date since starting cpap... There seems to be a significant difference between my using 13 & 14 cm of pressure. Hard for me to understand why they sent me home on a nasal mask at 8 cm after sleep study? Thanks to all that suggested that I needed more pressure. A special thanks to Rested Gal nice suggestion on the settings! It's obvious your practical experience is invaluable. Screen prints from lastnight.

Thank goodness Rested Gal is here... it makes me crazy that a doctor/dme can send you home with something that is totally wrong for you! I haven't met my sleep specialist yet... been working with my internist... but when I do see the sleep doc and if I find out my machine was set incorrectly, I'm going to have a screaming fit!

Do these people have any schooling at all?? Are they just salespeople?? I didn't particularly like the people at my dme, but I totally trusted that they set my machine properly, according to what the doctor ordered anyway.

I hear this type of thing over and over... something is very wrong!

I totally agree... Wish it wasn't true but in my opinion DME's are in it for money. Don't find the sleep techs to be particularly helpful either. I hope that just the ones that scored my initial study poorly. Hang in there it will get better.

Thanks,
John

Ditto for having Rested Gal as a great member of this forum...she was one of the first to reach out to me when I showed up several years ago.

Oh gosh.
Hey, I just guess based on what I'd try "if it were me." Doesn't mean what I'd do myself would work for someone else. Or would be the right thing for someone else to do.

Thanks for your much too kind words, folks.

Happy to hear that your therapy is going better, John.

These results are quite dramatic:

and may suggest that the use of APAP (or at least "wide open" APAP) is inappropriate in some (many?)(most?) cases.

I have a question (or 4):
  • What happened to the pressure line in the most recent download? A bug in the "home-grown" software?
  • In the event-laden DL, there is a salvo of obstructive events at what would later turn out to be therapeutic pressure. What's up with that?
  • Also in that DL there is a salvo of central events at what would turn out to be sub-therapeutic pressure. Why did they not get exponentially worse when pressure was effectively doubled?
  • Why do topics about algorithms get 100 views a day while topics about off-topics get 1000?
The last question is academic, of course. That behavior is typical in the life-cycle of all support groups.

Thanks for the comment NotMuffy,

Yes it does seem a bug...depends on the view or how much is selected...refreshing screen sometimes prior to print screen sometimes fixes it. Should be a solid line at 14cm there is a ramp also at 8 cm which seems to depict correctly.

In the event-laden DL, there is a salvo of obstructive events at what would later turn out to be therapeutic pressure. What's up with that?

Not sure but that was an terrible night not easy to explain any of it? I do agree the wide open auto machine is not for me. Starts way to low and reacts entirely to slowly. That was a week one rollercoaster ride after another. Machine at times went as high as 20 cm back down to below 8 and then climb to more than 15 cm. Amazes me that I was able to sleep through a lot of these changes? But never got more than 4 hrs sleep a night ugh! I believe I tuned machine off and then back on never really got to sleep after that which caused all the crazy data? It seems I react much better to stable higher pressure.

John

I want to add a thank you to Rested Gal too. I don't think I would have stayed with it without her. I was so ignorant when I first came I didn't even know what questions to ask. Now I can't imagine even a nap without my cpap. I even love my mask now that I figured out how to wear a eye mask with my Sleepweaver. I am happy now.
