New Vader head May the force be with us.

Post by Hossman55 » Tue Aug 23, 2011 12:52 pm

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I started using my machine about a week ago and I can tell a difference. I feel like I'm on the outside not the inside looking out. Before the machine I felt like crap I conserved all of my energy to just to be able to go to work. Now I'm not saying I'm ready to run a marathon or take on the world but now I feel like I'm part of it. I believe why I took to the machine so well is where I ride a motorcycle. Let me explain with the mask on it feels to me like riding my bike down the interstate. I was shocked when my DME gave me the machine that I have. They set it in cpap mode but with the info from your great site I went in and changed it to auto. The pressure they had me on was 11. In auto I set min. 8 max 15 is this about right? I would like all the info you all can give me.

Speaking of being a Vader head, I started CPAP on March 2010 and have been 99% compliant. For father's day this year my wife got me a birthday card with Darth Vader that would play Vader's breathing noise when you open the card and he would say "Luke, I am your father". It had me laughing and she told me that she got it because I've always joked that she enjoys sleeping with Darth Vader.

8 cm H2O might be a little low. A common rule of thumb for going from CPAP to APAP is "2 below, 3 above". OTOH, there's something to be said for setting the minimum pressure high enough to prevent nearly all obstructive events on an average night, with a higher maximum for when things get really ugly. Whatever you do, it's worth looking at your data in Encore Pro or SleepyHead to check whether or not your settings are really working for you.

Have you checked out your software options?
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=64906&st=0&sk=t&sd= ... re+options

You can see for yourself if the range you have selected is working. If you AHI is good...great...if not so good then you may need to increase that minimum a bit. The minimum pressure is the most critical because the machine doesn't go from zero to sixty in a flash..it climbs slowly and if it takes too long then the events come and go before the machine ever gets there. So we raise the minimum to give it a bit of a head start.

Congratulations on being one of the lucky few who gets such great results so quickly. Keep up the good work and good luck!
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.
