Nasal Breathing Aids

Post by dkdc » Sun Aug 21, 2011 10:38 am

Anyone have any thoughts, or info on things like "breathe right" strips, and the like?

I am trying one type now (I won't give the name) that seems to keep my nasal passages open. It can easily be used with cpap. (one of my troubles with cpap was that my nose would not be open enough - or at least it seemed that way).

I am not promoting them, or disparaging them. I am ignorant, and figure lots of you people know some things I don't. I can say that I think the one I use helps, but I don't know how much.

A link in case anyone is interested. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/1701735.stm

Do you mean that you have a blocked nose problem? or you use a nasal mask and you are trying to keep your mouth closed so you can
breath thru your nose exclusively. I bought some of the trips but have never used them. I my if my nose
was blocked I use one of those saline nasal irrigation kits, if blocked at bit I squirt a mix of sea salt and water
into my nose a few times, as necessary.

I think I have a narrow and at times blocked nose problem. Mild eviated septum and a few allergies.

I have a full face mask - but usually breathe through my nose - as far as I can tell.

I use nasonex and astelin sprays and they help, but the device I insert in my nose seems to help as well.

I have read there is now some evidence of a rebound effect from saline sprays. I don't know how good this evidence is. I suppose if it became an issue one could just stop for a little while and then restart. Or maybe most people only use saline occasionally.

Hi, I used to use the more nasonex & other nose sprays but weaned myself off them, I began to think, or read, that they can have a rebound effect and I have been much
better since I gave them up. Maybe some noses need to adjust to the constant air pressure as in my case I use only nasal pillow masks. Seem to remember that I have a problem with one nostril being narrow, but I don't fancy having an procedure for it as was suggested by a specialist.
there is, I think, a difference between saline spray and nasonex types of sprays, although cannot remember the contents now. I find saline to be better for me. It is cheaper to mix your own , using sea salt melted in warm water, I kept a couple of the spray bottles I bought with the commercial mix in. You can test the strength by putting some on your finger for a taste test, it only needs to be mild.
good luck with your therapy, there are times when we seem to need it!

Love your cat, so pretty. I lost mine just before March break and am still heartbroken about it and miss her so much, even though she was something of a "madam" at times, or maybe because she was!

My cat in the picture died last November. I should put the new cat's photo in there now.

Thanks for the responses.
