First Night... Feel Great!

Post by The Youngs » Sun Feb 12, 2006 11:11 am

But it's my husband that got the CPAP!

I hadn't realized how poorly I was sleeping listening for his apneas so I could shake him and trying to sleep through the snoring when he was breathing. He didn't snore at all last night and I just rejoiced to see him sleeping peacefully without gasping and struggling to breathe for the first time in our 20 years of marriage. I slept great!

Thanks so much to all of you who have taken the time to post your experiences and advice on this forum. We've been reading it a few weeks since my dh's sleep study and I feel like we were able to start out right because of you all!

Careful assuming he was the cause of your lack of sleep. It may very well be but my wife is realizing my snoring is not her entire problem. She doesnt appear to have apneas from what I can tell but still never gets real sleep and she's finally getting checked out as she is starting to have heart palputations, and oddly *low* blood pressure.. She's going to wear a Holter monitor and Pulse Ox this week. She's always felt tired during the day even before we met, but like me just assumed it was work and other causes. I wish people were made more aware how common this is and how serious it is!!

Good luck to both of you! I'm having a hard time with CPAP but I've realized it's because of my deviated septum and am scheduled for surgery.

Thanks,

Neofree

Youngs,

What a nice post. I'm glad you were able to sleep with hubby, first night.

My dw slept in the other bedroom for 2 weeks while I was trying to adapt to CPAP. I found it pretty miserable adapting. Happy to report that I'm doing brilliantly, now...after 3 months, and we are sleeping together.

She doesn't rave about the absence of my snoring, however. And, I snored bad enough that she had to wake me several times some nights. In fact, she feels sorry for me and says, "If you want to not use it [the apparatus], it's okay with me." I was only mildly apneic, though, so she wasn't concerned about that aspect.

Anyway, nice that the two of you are doing so well.

Jerry

Thanks for the encouragement, Jerry! Your stories on cpaptalk helped me a lot in figuring out what to buy and knowing we wanted something we could use software with!

Re: wearing the cpap, I have no mercy at all I told my dh that if he didn't wear the cpap, I'd put it on him after he went to sleep! His AHI was 58.9 and his father, who had apnea (but they didn't understand how serious it was then) died of a heart attack at 44.

Thankfully, dh didn't mind it the cpap at all the first night, but last night he had a lot of problems with leakages in his Ultra Mirage. I don't know if we need to adjust it differently or try a different mask. It seems to leak whenever the pressure goes up. He's an inveterate mouth breather, so a nasal mask is not an option at this point.

Again, I'm more grateful than I can say for this forum. I looked at a couple of other forums, but none had the spirit of helpfulness and friendliness that this one does.

That's the way I felt too, until I realized that tightening my Ultra Mirage FF mask to reduce leaks was worsening my apnea. I never did get what I would call a good seal with the Ultra Mirage FF mask.

On the other hand, I've used the little nasal Ultra Mirage mask for several nights now and not once had a problem with mouth breathing. Go figure! I did have congestion for about an hour one night which showed up as a constant string of snores on the Encore Pro data (but I definitely did not have my mouth open). My wife would have kicked me if I'd actually been snoring like that! .

The only thing I'm doing different now for nasal congestion than before I started CPAP is nightly sinus irrigation before going to bed.

Regards,
Bill
