Cpap and Employer

Post by ZQuest » Sun Aug 21, 2011 5:46 am

Hello: Cpaper's

I have been diagnosed and on Apap for about 15 month's now with very good success with therapy, doctor, and yes even with my dme i guess i've been lucky thanks to some of the GREAT post that i have read on this forum, some of which have helped me make some good desitions, for this i thank you all. Now for the reason of this post,i have a few questions that i have not seen being address on this forum.

1) If youre diagnosed with SA do you feel that you should inform your employer? ( if you work with machinery or other equipment that may impact your safety or the safety of other's )
2) Does the Employer has the right to know? ( Even if youre getting the right treatment for this disorder)
3) What has been some of your experiences positive or negative that some of you have encounter with your employer knowing or finding out that your have an SA disorder? ( Of course this all depends on what type of work you do and how it may impact other's )

I believe that i've read some where about Trucker's needing to get tested frequently if they have SA.Does this mean that under surtain circumstaces the employer must be inform?

Regards: Phil

Truck drivers with CDL license have to carry their medical card and physical at all times. OSA is plainly shown as a diagnosis. This physical is also part of driver's records with employer. So no way to hide it. Truck drivers aren't necessarily tested more frequently but they do have to be able to prove 4 hours of use in 24 hour period.
With some companies if the driver meets certain physical requirements he can be forced to take a sleep study as part of the medical physical which is done usually ever 2 years but annually for some drivers based on history.

How other employers in other areas address this issue I have no idea. I just happen to be married to a truck driver.
