Nose burns using nasal pillow

Post by Cjsimmons0 » Thu Aug 18, 2011 8:37 am

Hey all,

I just got a new type of mask. The mirage liberty. So it is a hybrid mask, and i find it more comfortable then the ffm i was using. The problem I had with my first night is that it felt like the air going through my left nostril was starting to burn. Does this happen to anyone else? I am sure it is because I am not used to it, but is there anything I can do to make it burn less? My humidifier is turned up to 3 out of 5 on my machine.

You need more humidity.

Ok I will try that... I hope my humidifier is actually working.... How long should it take to feel a difference in humidity, if that even is possible?

Might also add a wee bit of Lansinoh ointment (found in the baby section at Walmart because nursing mom's use it on nipples) inside the nostril.

I use Ayr saline nasal gel. Can find at WalMart. It is cooling and soothing. You can use it before you apply your nasal mask and anytime throughout the day. I don't have to use it as much now that I am broken in!

do the ointment/gel deteriorate the masks or wear and tear faster w/the use of these products? Thanks.

Petroleum products include petroleum jelly (Vaseline), Neosporin, mineral oil, and many lotions and moisturizers.
Some 'professionals' claim that these products will not harm silicone.
They are either ignorant or lying.

Either the humidifier or CPAP machine in your profile is wrong. That humidifier doesn't work with that CPAP.

Does your machine say "Philips Respironics?" Does the humidifier fit on the side?

If so, you have a PRS1 machine and it tries to do smart humidification. Sometimes, you can turn the smart humidification off and get more humidity with "dumb" humidification. If you want to use dumb humidification, it's referred to as "System One Humidification" in the clinician's menu. Turn "System One Humidification" off to try the dumb humidification. You may get more rainout and other humidity problems with dumb humidification.

To see if it's working, when the machine has been off for a few hours take out the tank and feel how warm the metal plate is. Put the mask on, turn on the machine and crank the humidity knob to 5. Let it run for a while, shut off, and take the tank out and feel the metal plate on the tank again. The plate on the humidifier itself might be hot, so touch carefully if you touch that.
