Hello everyone! New guy here!!

Post by BamaBoy » Mon Aug 15, 2011 9:18 pm

I have been reading around on the forum for a few days now, and I have really learned alot! I am new to all of this, I have been on cpap for only 3 days now, but I can already see a change in how I feel. I can't wait to see how I feel after a few weeks and longer!! I now there is more for me to learn from all the great people on here, I can't wait! I do have one thing to ask now. When I get up in the mornings my nose and around my eyes are puffy for an hour are so, can anyone tell me why that is? Thanks!!

Did your eyes do this before using cpap?

My nose isn't puffy in the mornings but my eyes are. I dunno why. I'm still adjusting to the machine, too. I notice I get a few mask leaks in my nose/eye area and I thought maybe that was why. Are you getting those, too>?

Yes I do have some leaks around my nose/eye area during the night, but nothing to bad. I need to find me a mask for side sleepers. I cannot go to sleep on my back!!

No my eyes are never that puffy, but the past 3 days they have been. I didn't know if it was the cpap or something else.

Air leaking near the eyes can cause irritation. Tinker with the mask tilt adjustment, and tightening and loosening the upper and lower straps. Don't make the mistake of simply tightening the straps. Paradoxically, sometimes looser seals better.

Hi BamaBoy,

I was using the exact same combo as you but have just changed masks. I was getting sore on the bridge of my nose so I changed my mask (i just spoke to the sleep clinic and they changed it). I am now using the Easylite mask (also respironics) and it's much more gentle and less likely to leak.

leaking is a problem that needs to be dealt with promptly. leaking from the mask will prevent you from getting suitable therapy from the machine and yes, can cause irritation as archangle mentioned. It's important every night to make sure there are no leaks (air should escape from the vent at the top though). If you can't stop the leaks with the mask you have, try another.

I believe once you solve this leaking your eyes will return to normal. if it doesn't help your nose, try a mask that is softer like the EasyLite or there are ones that sit in your nostrils rather than around your nose.

good luck

Welcome Welcome!

Sometimes it can take time to adjust to having something strapped to your face and blowing in your sinuses all night =) However, if it becomes severe enough to impact your day-to-day life, you will want to call your sleep doc and/or respiratory therapist.

Welcome to the forum BamaBoy. Since you're able to use a nasal mask (rather than a Full Face mask to cover nose and mouth at same time) you might find that nasal pillows suit you better, especially for sleeping on your side with a less bulky mask to interfere with laying the side of your face against your bed pillow.

The Swift FX nasal pillows mask might be more comfortable for you. I'd give that a try.

Also, if you haven't already fixed a way to keep the main air hose from tugging on a mask when you turn over, look into ways some of the people on this forum have rigged the main air hose to prevent pulling a mask out of place (which can make a mask spring little leaks) --

We're all grumping about allergies, likely ragweed, here in the Atlanta area -- might be part of the problem. Mine kicked in a week or so ago; I've had more congestion, watery & puffy eyes, lousy sleep too.
