Problems with Respironics humidifier not heating

Post by carosan » Sat Aug 06, 2011 4:21 am

Hi...as mentioned in my previous post I have been on CPAP for the last 6 weeks. Started off trialing a Resmed S9 Auto set which worked really well, however when
it came time to purchase a machine I decided to go for the Philips Respironics PR1 Auto as the price was attractive & I had heard really good reports.
I ended up being really disappointed.... the humidifier never seemed to heat up & blew out really cold air which really irritated my sinuses so found I couldn't sleep
properly with the machine & ended up with a head cold. Heated air sure seems to make a big difference, at least for me!

Has anyone else had this problem?

I ended up exchanging the machine for the Resmed S9 Auto set and haven't looked back but am still baffled as to why the Respironics did this.
Did I just get a dud machine or is this a common problem? The place I purchased it from were very helpful & tried to change the settings & even changed
over the unit (although not the humidifier) & frustratingly the heat came on in their shop but when I turned it on that night it was still stone cold after being on for hours.

Just curious as it looks like my husband might be joining me wearing a "jet pilot mask" (as he calls it) to sleep ...it looks like he may also have sleep apnea so may end up needing to purchase a
2nd machine.

Thanks
Caro

I use the PR S1 machine and humidifier.
The PR S1 humidifier has 2 modes of operation.
Classic mode would be the "old" way which is simple heat. I find this method uses more water than the "new" mode.
The new mode (don't have a name for it that I have seen) uses the thermal and humidity sensors to adjust heat and humidity. So room temp and ambient humidity will make a difference on how much heat gets applied.
It is not nearly as adjustable as the ResMed climateline system. Though I think I heard that PR is working on such a system.

I have no idea why yours did not heat in your house but would somewhere else unless it was using the sensors and it didn't think it was needed based on your chosen settings. Maybe it was a lemon. I happened to check my humidifier this morning because I woke up to a faint plastic smell which usually means that I have run out of water. I am using the "new" mode at a setting of 4 because I really like and need the extra moisture. The bottom of the water chamber was quite hot to touch when I pulled it out to check water level.

Your experience was not the norm. I haven't heard of anything similar, so surely not a common complaint.

The default mode for the PRS1 humidifier is meant to prevent rainout. It does not generally heat the water or the air unless the climate you are in is very dry. It's like an arctic blast most of the time where I live--we have moderate to high humidity. I love it in the summer, but can't stand it in the winter.

In winter I switch over to classic mode. That does warm up the water very slightly. The airflow is still cold, but it's not like an arctic blast. In default mode I use up one tank of water in7-8 days. In classic mode I have to refill every other day.

Yes, the low humidity problem from the PRS1 machines is easily fixed by pushing the right buttons, unless it's actually broken.

Love the jet pilot comment.

Thanks guys for all your thoughts. Sounds like we had a dud as the crowd we purchased it thru did try changing the settings!

Anyhow for us (myself who has to use it! & my hubby who has to sleep next to me & the 3rd partner in the bed (aka S9) the Resmed has been the "chosen one."

If it does turn out he has sleep apnea he thinks he will try something completely different...maybe Fisher & Paykel!

Now we can both wear our jet pilot masks and compare flight logs in the morning. LOL!

I doubt it. My guess is that the DME had NO idea about "classic mode" or how to set it. But you probably would not have been happy with Classid mode, either, because it really does not warm the air.

I have a respironics resmed bipap machine. My ins company changed the supply provider last year to Norco. My machine was cutting on and off and I took itin and she sent it off for repairs. In the meantime I used a wonderful loaner, same machine and still my humidifier is not working properly and my sleep is of course not as good as with the loaner. I took it back for a third time and the Norco lady who appeared put off and put out said she didn't know what else she could do for me!!!! Anyone know what I should do next? Thank you, dry and stuff in Nevada

You are VERY confused///there is no Resperonics Resmed machine...it' s one or the other..It sounds like your machine (whatever it is) and your humidifier both don't work. Time for new equipment.
