Chest Pain at Night

Post by sugarflumpairie » Wed Jan 26, 2005 9:12 pm

Hi....I am new here. I found this web site looking for information on sleep apnea. I am a 37 yr old female that actually just quit smoking ...I think it's been almost 2 weeks!! So, anyways...I have been waking alot in the night with chest pain. It comes and goes in spurts. I wake up when I go to take a deep breath and can't because it hurts so much. I also wake up drenched in sweat, so much so that I have to change my clothes...I am literally soaked...grose I know, and I realize that may be a whole other topic...so...I was wondering if anyone else has chest pain? I did go to the doc and I have an appointment for a consultation at a sleep center coming up. I'm kind of nervous. This has been going on for some time...I think about 2 yrs or so. I am releieved in a sense of getting involved with a sleep study but also nervous. If anyone else has some info on this i would so greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Welcome!

What did your doctor have to say about the chest pains? While you may well have sleep apnea, I'm concerned about your chest pains. It's only my opinion, but if I were you, I'd also go to a good cardiologist to get checked out, just in case.

Before being diagnosed I found that my heart was racing big time at night, noticing it whenever I woke up, which was several times a night. Your heart should be at rest at night during sleep, not racing or with chest pains. I didn't have the chest pains, but I was worried about my heart. Turns out the heart was alright, just stressed from the sleep apnea and from oxygen depletion related to the condition. Personally, I would want to know for sure from a cardiologist, along with the testing for sleep apnea.

Keep us posted on how things go. And be sure to ask for a copy of the test report that is created from the sleep lab tests. The doctor will likely go over the results and show you them, but get a copy. That way you'll have the numbers in case you need to know more about them. People here are great at helping you understand the test results.

Keep in touch, and let us know how things go.

Hi Linda,

Thank you for responding to my questions. When you have the sleep study done does that also detect other things? Like you mentioned your heart was racing? What kind of things does a sleep study study? I did talk to my doc about the chest pains before and have been back and forth a few times with no real answers...i am hoping I will finally get some now. The 1st time I went, they did a quickie EKG and said nothing was wrong, the 2nd time I went they said to use my inhaler as i have asthma, not severe, but acts up once in a while...that sometimes works but not always...besides, i dont feel comfortable inhaling at night when I cant talk or breathe and I am unaware of how much time has passed....i could be puffing every 10 mins for all I know!! They also put me on singular...didn't work either.
My heart doesn't race at all. I just wake up trying to take a breath and I can't. What kind of things were happening to you in the night? And, what made you get to the doc?

Hey Sugar,

I had chest pains when I woke in the morning, but it was due to among other things, struggling for breath all night long. However, it was never the chest pain that woke me in the night, it was something that existed when I awoke in the morning.

Unless your night sweats a physical reaction to dreams that you are having, should be taken very seriously. I don't want to be an alarmist, but your doctor should be very concerned about it. My close friend (33yrs old) is battling cancer and he was told that his night sweats were one of the symptoms. Please, don't worry, but see a specialist or at least talk to your physician about your concerns. You may just be experiencing anxiety which the night sweats are a physiological reaction to it.

They test all sort of things at the sleep center, number of arousals due to apneas and hypopneas, heart-rate, time spent in various sleep stages, blood oxygen saturation, but it is designed to detect a sleeping disorder stemming from difficulty breathing not other problems.

I wish you the best of luck.

Hey Sugar,

Your night sweats may also be due to a hormone change - something I know nothing about.

I sure hope you find the answer to your chest pain and night sweats soon.

Hey there Sugar! Just like Procastinator was saying.... you should be sure to stress to your doctor that you are having these chest pains. Have them do a Stress Test too!!

Congrats on quitting smoking, by the way! I quit last year, it's been 1 year on 1/7/05. And quite honestly, right after is when I started getting all kinds of symptoms I never had before.

First thing was "Chest Pains", I had EKG and Stress Tests done too... both came back negative thankfully. Then I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux - still have that to this day.... every so often I will wake up with not just the tightening sensation in my chest but also with the taste of throwing up in my mouth... gross, I know, but it's true! Then I found out that my blood levels were too low and my thyroid has decided to call it quits on me... that was last July! Great, what else could go wrong? You guessed it.... Here I am now.... with Apnea!! And all I did was complain to my doctor that my Thyroid meds weren't do their job and I am still feeling tired all day long. Like I can't seem to get enough sleep.... he sent me to get the Sleep Test done, that was last week. Boy... Now What? What more can go wrong?

Get checked out kiddo..... We need you!!!

I have just recently been tested with 2 sleep studies. My Dr. prescribed me a machine, and I have recieved it pretty quickly within 4 days. The only thing I had to wait for was the mask. Just got it today, so I am going to use it tonight, cant wait. I loved using it for the 2nd test and I couldnt wait to get mine. I am 33 years old 6 ft 2, big frame, overweight.I have been told tha there are many severity levels of apnea, and you do not have to be overweight to have apnea. In my case my Dr told me to try to lose some lbs and the snoring and apnea will get less. And that the cpap machine is used for therapy. If I lose the wieght, I will not have to use the machine. So I am trying to lose the lbs, and use the machine until I do not need ot anymore.
